Associations Between Having a Spouse/Partner with Alcohol Problems and One’s Own Risk of Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders by Sexual Orientation
Introduction The association between an individual’s alcohol misuse and their spouse’s/partner’s behavioral health is well documented. Whether these associations vary by sexual orientation is unknown. Methods We used data from the 2012–2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC-III; n = 36,309 U.S. adults ≥18 years). Using multivariable logistic regression models, we examined the associations between sexual orient…
Associations of sexual orientation and state-level antidiscrimination policy protections with alcohol, tobacco, and mental health outcomes in a U.S. sample of adolescents and adults
Interpersonal health care discrimination and delayed alcohol use treatment among sexual minority adults with multiple stigmatized identities
Experiences of prejudice and discrimination contribute to heightened risk for alcohol use-related harm among sexual minority (SM) individuals. Discrimination in health care settings can also reduce help-seeking and treatment engagement. However, most research has focused on only one form of discrimination in isolation. This study used an intersectional stigma lens to examine associations between interpersonal health care discrimination and delaye…
Bereavement service deserts
Bereavement represents a significant public health concern due to rising mortality rates in the United States. Little is known about the availability and distribution of bereavement services at the state and local level, hindering efforts to assess how well these services address community needs. This cross-sectional study analyzed bereavement agencies across Michigan's 83 counties, examining services and the relationship between mortality rates …
Ethnic Discrimination, Sexual Orientation Discrimination, and DSM-5 Alcohol Use Disorder Among U.S. Latino or Hispanic Adults
We aimed to assess the probability of past-year DSM-5 alcohol use disorder (AUD) and past-year moderate-to-severe DSM-5 AUD as a function of past-year ethnic discrimination among U.S. Latino/Hispanic adults and as a function of past-year discrimination types among Latino/Hispanic sexual minorities (SM). We used data from the 2012-2013 National Epidemiological Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions-III ( n = 36,309 U.S. adults aged ≥18 years). O…
Experiences of families bereaved by opioid-related death
Family members bereaved by a drug-related death are underserved. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 12 people bereaved by a close family member’s opioid-related death. Reflexive thematic analysis was used to identify themes in four areas: emotional responses (e.g. anticipatory grief), communication about the death (i.e. open or closed), supports (e.g. social or formal), and advice for others who lost a family member to opioid…
Moderate-to-Severe Tobacco Use Disorder and Discrimination Among U.S. Sexual Minority Older Adults
Greater cumulative discrimination based on ethnicity/race and sexual orientation was associated with increased risk for moderate-to-severe TUD among sexual minority adults aged ≥65 years. Our findings underscore the importance of age considerations in understanding the role of discrimination in the assessment and treatment of TUD
Healthcare avoidance due to anticipated discrimination among transgender people
Transgender people encounter interpersonal and structural barriers to healthcare access that contribute to their postponement or avoidance of healthcare, which can lead to poor physical and mental health outcomes. Using the 2015 U.S. Transgender Survey, this study examined avoidance of healthcare due to anticipated discrimination among transgender adults aged 25 to 64 ( N = 19,157). Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to test…
Profound health-care discrimination experienced by transgender people
Chinese enclave protections among married Chinese American women
Objective: Like the barrio advantage theory related to Mexican Americans, a theory about the protective effects of Chinese American enclaves is developing. Such protections were examined among socioeconomically vulnerable people with colon cancer. Design: A colon cancer cohort established in California between 1995 and 2000, and followed until the enactment of the Affordable Care Act was utilized in this study. Secondary analysis was conducted on…
