The automobile and transport policy
Auto‐centered transport systems are analyzed and related to contemporary transport policy. Auto‐centered transport features a high level of dependence on the auto for daily mobility, and a social space and built environment dominated by the material infrastructures of automobility. Speaking about accidents: The Ideology of Auto Safety
Discourses about traffic accidents are limited by an ideology of automobility that has accompanied increased auto dependence and the hegemony of the automobile over social space. The Welfare Industry: Functionaries and Recipients in Public Aid
Takes sociological stock of American poverty and the efforts at reform in the 1960s and early 70s, focusing on urban public assistance and on efforts to improve the system -- particularly efforts that were pursued in the name of poor persons themselves. 'A well-organized but varied collection of research efforts to support the argument that two processes -- bureaucratization and professionalization -- alter poverty. The authors, eminently qualifi…
