  • Genetics and Scientific Values

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Bryan J Pesta et al.•ARTICLE•The Hastings Center Report•2025

This letter responds to the essay “Confronting the ‘Weaponization’ of Genetics by Racists Online and Elsewhere,” by Aaron Panofsky, Kushan Dasgupta, Nicole Iturriaga, and Bernard Koch, in “Envisioning a More Just Genomics,” the November‐December 2024 special report of the Hastings Center Report

  • Links between Ethnicity, Socioeconomic Status, and Measured Cognition in Diverse Samples of UK Adults

Open Access•Bryan J Pesta, Jan te Nijenhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Comparative Sociology•2023

In the UK, immigrant groups frequently have lower mean socioeconomic status ( SES ) than do White British, which is a source of concern for the British government. Group-level SES tends to show positive relationships with cognitive ability scores. Thus, the authors estimate the mean cognitive and SES scores of various ethnic groups and test empirically if they correlate. They compute SES and cognitive ability scores using high-quality representat…

  • Validity evidence and measurement equivalence for the Dutch translation of the conditional reasoning test for aggression

    Open Access•James M Lebreton, Sydney L Reichin et al.•ARTICLE•Applied Psychology•2022

The Conditional Reasoning Test for Aggression (CRT‐A) indirectly measures the implicit motive to aggress by engaging respondents in inductive reasoning tasks. Most research involving the CRT‐A has been based on the original English version of the test with most data being collected in the United States. The purpose of the current paper is to evaluate the psychometric properties of a Dutch translation of this test and to examine if it could be use…

  • The Myth of the Stupid Believer

Open Access•E Dutton, Jan te Nijenhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Religion and Health•2020

Numerous studies have found a negative relationship between religiousness and IQ. It is in the region of − 0.2, according to meta-analyses. The reasons for this relationship are, however, unknown. It has been suggested that higher intelligence leads to greater attraction to science, or that it helps to override evolved cognitive dispositions such as for religiousness. Either way, such explanations assume that the religion–IQ nexus is on general i…

  • Spearman’s hypothesis tested comparing Korean young adults with various other groups of young adults on the items of the Advanced Progressive Matrices

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Yu Yong Choi et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

Spearman’s hypothesis tested at the subtest level of an IQ battery states that differences between races on the subtests of an IQ battery are a function of the g loadings of these subtests, such that there are small differences between races on subtests with low g loadings and large differences between races on subtests with high g loadings. Jensen (1998) stated that Spearman’s hypothesis is a law-like phenomenon. It has also been confirmed many …

  • Do schooling gains yield anomalous Jensen effects? A reply to Flynn (2019) including a meta-analysis

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Esteban van der Boor et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2019

A test of Jensen effects is of nil value as a diagnostic instrument when various good-sized meta-analyses show Jensen effects appear for both genetic effects and environmental effects. Using thought experiments, Flynn (2019) claims that some schooling gains yield Jensen effects, which should not be the case for an environmental effect. However, a meta-analysis ( K = 12, total N = 60,993, mean r = 0.13) of schooling gains shows no Jensen effect. R…

  • Analysing Group Differences in Intelligence Using the Psychometric Meta-Analytic Method of Correlated Vectors Hybrid Model

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Michael van den Hoek•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2018

Wicherts (2018) criticizes the use of the method of correlated vectors when testing Spearman’s hypothesis. It is argued that Wicherts ignores the psychometric meta-analytic method of correlated vectors hybrid model and so is attacking a strawman.

  • Spearman’s Hypothesis Tested Comparing Saudi Arabian Children and Adolescents With Various Other Groups of Children and Adolescents on the Items of the Standard Progressive Matrices

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Adel A Batterjee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2017

Spearman’s hypothesis tested at the level of items states that differences between ethnic groups on the items of an IQ test are a function of the g loadings of these items, such that there are small differences between ethnic groups on items with low g loadings and large differences between ethnic groups on items with high g loadings; this has been confirmed in a limited number of studies. In this paper, Spearman’s hypothesis was tested, comparin…

  • The Correlation Between G Loadings and Heritability in Russia

Open Access•Ivan Voronin, Jan te Nijenhuis et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2016

The study focused on the extent to which the general factor of intelligence g and heritability coefficients of the subtests of an IQ battery correlate. Modest to strong positive correlations were found in five studies from Western countries and six studies from a Japanese meta-analysis. The results for Russian twins were compared with those of the Western and Japanese studies. Data from 402 twins aged 13 and 296 twins aged 16 showed correlations …

  • Classroom ratings of likeability and popularity are related to the Big Five and the general factor of personality

  • Group Differences in Mean Intelligence for the Dutch and Third World Immigrants

Open Access•Jan te Nijenhuis, Henk Van Der Flier•ARTICLE•Journal of Biosocial Science•2001

Evidence from eleven samples indicates that the mean IQ of third world immigrants in the Netherlands is lower than the Dutch mean by approximately one standard deviation for Surinamese and Antillians, and by approximately one and a half standard deviations for Turks and Moroccans. Since IQ tests provide the best prediction of success in school and organizations, it could be that the immigrants’ lower mean IQ is an important factor in their low st…
