How masculinity and treatment impact posttraumatic stress disorder recovery in sexual minority men with sexual trauma
Sexual violence and associated risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are pressing and pervasive public health issues. Sexual minority men, or men whose sexual orientation is not exclusively heterosexual, are at heightened risk for both sexual violence and PTSD compared to heterosexual men. Regardless of sexual orientation, stigma surrounding sexual violence and masculinity norms can interfere with trauma processing and treatment, suggestin…
Trauma exposure, mental health, and mental health treatment among LGBTQ+ veterans and nonveterans
The study was the first to demonstrate that LGBTQ+ veterans have a greater prevalence of PTEs and other stressors and report worse mental health symptoms. These findings suggest that LGBTQ+ veterans may have unmet mental health treatment needs and need interventions to increase engagement in needed mental health services, especially for depression and anxiety. Our findings suggest that targeting intimate relationship functioning in treatment for male veterans may be beneficial because difficulties in these relationships appear to be a motivating factor for treatment seeking. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2023 APA, all rights reserved)
Depressive Anhedonia and Creative Self‐concepts, Behaviors, and Achievements
In the large literature on creativity and mental illness, relatively few studies have explored anhedonia—impairments in anticipating, seeking, and experiencing rewards. This project explored self‐reported creativity in a sample of adults who differed in depressive anhedonia, determined via face‐to‐face structured clinical interviews. Participants completed measures of everyday creativity (engaging in common creative behaviors and hobbies), creati…
Perfectionism and Loneliness
Introduction: Research suggests that social disconnection is one pathway that explains why perfectionists have higher negative mental health outcomes. However, thus far research has not examined the role that perfectionists' expectations, about their social world, plays in explaining social disconnection. The current study examined whether negative expectations about future social events and social hopelessness explained the relations between soc…
