Emotional specificity and attributional clarity in daily life: Associations with depression, rumination, and overgeneralizing cognitions
This study used a qualitative approach to examine how specificity in emotional labeling (reflecting greater differentiation) and clarity of emotion attributions in daily life are associated with depressive symptoms and cognition (rumination and overgeneralization). Participants were 191 young adults (74% female, racially/ethnically diverse, mean age 19) who completed baseline measures and a 14-day daily diary that included two prompts about their…
Mental Illness Identity: A Scoping Review
Mental illness identity (MII) is the extent to which a mental illness is integrated into a person’s self-concept. MII plays an important role in help-seeking and health outcomes, but findings have been mixed. The primary aims of this scoping review were to examine the breadth and depth of research on MII and synthesize this disparate literature. A literature search (PsychInfo, PubMed) using “disability identity,” “illness identity,” “health ident…
Referrals to Community and State Agencies to Address Social Determinants of Health for Improving Mental Health, Functioning, and Quality of Care Outcomes for Diverse Adults
Objectives. To examine whether referral for social determinants of health (SDH) needs decreases psychological distress and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and improves level of functioning and quality of care among diverse adults. Methods. Data are from control participants (n = 503 adults) in a randomized controlled trial testing a mental health intervention in North Carolina and Massachusetts. We fitted multilevel mixed-effects mo…
Self-reflection, insight, and mood disorder symptoms: Evaluating the short form of the self-reflection and insight scale with clinical interviews and self-reports
Depressive Anhedonia and Creative Self‐concepts, Behaviors, and Achievements
In the large literature on creativity and mental illness, relatively few studies have explored anhedonia—impairments in anticipating, seeking, and experiencing rewards. This project explored self‐reported creativity in a sample of adults who differed in depressive anhedonia, determined via face‐to‐face structured clinical interviews. Participants completed measures of everyday creativity (engaging in common creative behaviors and hobbies), creati…
Perfectionism and Loneliness: The Role of Expectations and Social Hopelessness in Daily Life
Introduction: Research suggests that social disconnection is one pathway that explains why perfectionists have higher negative mental health outcomes. However, thus far research has not examined the role that perfectionists' expectations, about their social world, plays in explaining social disconnection. The current study examined whether negative expectations about future social events and social hopelessness explained the relations between soc…
Perfectionism and causal attributions: An experience sampling approach
Perfectionism, Goal Adjustment, and Self-Regulation: A Short-term Follow-up Study of Distress and Coping
This study examined socially-prescribed and self-oriented perfectionism (SPP and SOP) and goal adjustment in relation to goal pursuit, depression, and coping. Students (N = 388) completed measures of perfectionism, idiographic goal pursuit, goal adjustment, and depressive symptoms, and a subset (n = 138) completed an online follow-up assessing stress-related depression and coping. SPP, but not SOP, was associated with current depressive symptoms …
Missed Beeps and Missing Data: Dispositional and Situational Predictors of Nonresponse in Experience Sampling Research
Experience sampling research measures people’s thoughts, feelings, and actions in their everyday lives by repeatedly administering brief questionnaires throughout the day. Nonresponse—failing to respond to these daily life questionnaires—has been a vexing source of missing data. The present research examined person-level, day-level, and signal-level predictors of nonresponse. We analyzed data from a sample of 450 young adults who were signaled 8 …
Palm or Cell? Comparing Personal Digital Assistants and Cell Phones for Experience Sampling Research
Personal digital assistants (PDA), particularly Palm Pilots, are popular data collection devices in experience sampling research. The declining availability of such devices, however, has prompted researchers to explore alternative technologies for signaling participants and collecting responses. The present research considers interactive voice response (IVR) methods, which can deliver questions and collect data using common cell phones. Participa…
