Why It May Be Useful to Integrate the Stereotype Content Model and the Interpersonal Perspective
This article synthesizes how we think about groups and how we behave during interpersonal situations by integrating the influential stereotype content model from social psychology and the interpersonal perspective in personality and clinical psychology. The empirically derived structural model of the interpersonal circumplex closely resembles the stereotype content model in its general form and specific dimensions. Integration allows researchers …
Recalled parent–child interactions that characterize “risky” early family environments
Results suggest that hostile and distant interpersonal processes in the early family environment may underlie and contribute to exposure to early adversities and associated outcomes. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2026 APA, all rights reserved)
Early Adversity and Changes in Cortisol and Negative Affect in Response to Interpersonal Threats in the Laboratory
Adverse childhood experiences, such as abuse and neglect, are associated with poor health outcomes. This association may be partially explained by differences in stress physiology. Though most early adverse experiences occur within the context of interpersonal relationships, stress exposures manipulated in the laboratory rarely involve interpersonal interactions beyond the mere presence of others. This study examines whether adverse childhood exp…
Risky Early Family Environment and Genetic Associations with Adult Metabolic Dysregulation
Growing up in a family environment characterized by neglectful parenting, overt conflict, and unsupportive relationships is associated with poor health in adulthood. A risky early family environment may also be associated with obesity in adulthood, likely through the activation of the HPA axis. Likewise, the GABAergic (gamma-aminobutyric acid) T>C single nucleotide polymorphism in the 1519 nucleotide position of the GABAAα6 receptor subunit gene …
An Examination of Sleep as a Mediator of the Relationship between Childhood Adversity and Depression in Hispanic and Non-Hispanic Young Adults
The current study integrates previous research on adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and long-term health outcomes to examine associations between ACEs, sleep duration, and depression in a diverse, mostly healthy, sample of young adults. We examine whether sleep duration mediates the association between ACEs and depression among young adults, and whether ethnicity may moderate observed relationships between ACEs, sleep duration and depression. …
Prospective Associations of Parenting and Childhood Maltreatment with Personality in Adolescent Males
This longitudinal study examines whether early experiences with caregivers between the ages of 10 and 12 are associated with later adolescent personality at age 16 using both parent and child reports. Lower positive parenting was prospectively associated with higher neuroticism and lower extraversion and conscientiousness for both parent and self-reports of personality, as well as lower openness and agreeableness by parent report. Substantiated m…
Relations between cannabis use, socioeconomic status, and risk perceptions in a Hispanic/Latinx population
Socioeconomic status (SES) and risk perceptions are indicative of cannabis use and subjective social status (SSS) may have utility in predicting cannabis use. This work examined relations between these indicators of cannabis use and use in a Hispanic/Latinx sample. Results found negative relations between risk perceptions and cannabis use. SES was unrelated to cannabis outcomes and risk perceptions but SSS had a negative relation with lifetime us…
Socioeconomic Status and Cardiovascular Responses to Standardized Stressors
Is subjective social status a unique correlate of physical health? A meta-analysis.
OBJECTIVE: Both social stratification (e.g., social rank) as well as economic resources (e.g., income) are thought to contribute to socioeconomic health disparities. It has been proposed that subjective socioeconomic status (an individual's perception of his or her hierarchical rank) provides increased predictive utility for physical health over and above more traditional, well-researched socioeconomic constructs such as education, occupation, an…
