  • Psychology of the Scientist

    Open Access•Brad J Bushman, H S Bertilson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

This article reports a citation analysis of research on human aggression. Citations from articles on aggression were culled from Aggressive Behavior, Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, Journal of Personality, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Research in Personality, Journal of Social Psychology, and Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin for the 3-yr. period 1980–1982. Out of 1194 books and journal articles, 35…

  • Preference for Immediate Events

    Open Access•H S Bertilson•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

When faced with inevitable mild electric shock to the wrist, most people prefer to “get it over with” immediately. The present experiment tested the generality of this preference by asking 60 college students to choose between immediate and delayed drinks of a bitter tasting quinine sulfate solution. The immediate bitter drink was chosen over an equally bitter, delayed drink on 88% of the trials. A control condition using tap water was also teste…

  • Awareness of Aggressive Response Contingencies When Using the Reaction-Time Research Task

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, L J Bendinelli•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1985

College students interacted via the Taylor reaction-time method of studying aggression with an opponent who attacked the subject with maximum shocks for six trials and switched to a matching strategy for 1, 6, or 12 additional trials. At the end of the task, subjects responded to a questionnaire that measured awareness of their own shock settings, the opponent's shock settings, and the relationship between shock settings made by the subject and t…

  • Withdrawal and Matching Strategies in Reducing Attack-Instigated Aggression

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, Stephen A Wonderlich et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1984

This article reports a conceptual replication of earlier work by Dengerink and Bertilson. For a random sample of attack-instigated subjects, the use of a withdrawal strategy by an opponent is the most effective way to reduce the subject's aggression. Dengerink and Bertilson demonstrated this effect using the Taylor reaction-time procedures. The present report of similar findings used the interpersonal communications task. A matching strategy was …

  • Withdrawal, matching, withdrawal-matching, and variable-matching strategies in reducing attack-instigated aggression

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, Stephen A Wonderlich et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1983•References: 25

Several studies have investigated strategies that a participant in dyadic aggression may use to reduce the aggression of the other participant. In one set of these studies the subject is instigated to aggression by an opponent who sets maximum shocks for the subject to receive during the first block of six trials. Following attack-instigation, opponents shift to withdrawal and matching strategies for 18 trials. The withdrawal strategy is an abrup…

  • Underrepresentation of Female Referents as Pronouns, Examples and Pictures in Introductory College Textbooks

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, D K Springer et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1982

A series of recent studies have investigated the impact of male referents such as “he” and “mankind” on the gender that listeners and readers attribute to a statement. A review of these experiments provides compelling evidence that underrepresentation of similar female referents leads people to attribute the roles presented as more representative of males than females. The review also suggests that the attributional bias is robust and not attenua…

  • Treatment Program for Borderline Hypertension among College Students

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, Albert E Bartz et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1979

A single group outcome study of treatment for borderline hypertension was performed. 8 male college students, with elevated blood pressure, were identified through campus-wide, blood-pressure screening and were referred by the Health Center for a treatment program of general relaxation and biofeedback-induced relaxation. 4 undergraduate psychology majors conducted training sessions three times per week for each subject. On the basis of increases …

  • Measurement of Mouse Squeals for 23 Hours as Evidence of Long-Term Effects of Alcohol on Aggression in Pairs of Mice

    Open Access•H S Bertilson, John D Mead et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1977

A squeal-detection circuit was used to infer the effects of alcohol on aggressive behavior in pairs of mice over a period. Four conditions were compared, a no-injection control and injections of 30% alcohol, 10% alcohol, and a saline solution. Mouse squeals, the dependent variable, decreased with increases in alcohol dosage. The decrease in aggression-related squeals occurred during peak aggression periods up to 13 hr. after injection
