Determinants of cognitive skills in adulthood
The current study examines change and stability of cognitive skills across life stages and delves into the factors contributing to changes in cognitive skills. Specifically, we examine the associations between cognitive skills and individual characteristics and contextual factors in a large sample of German adults aged 16–65 years ( N = 2,430; PIAAC-L data). Across all age cohorts, cognitive skills were predicted mainly by a person’s educational …

Überlegungen Zur Hybriden Form Des Vermeintlich Ersten Tonfilms the Jazz Singer (Usa 1927, Alan Crosland)
Alpenloopings in Heimatklänge
Piaac-L
This paper describes the main features of PIAAC-L, the German longitudinal follow-up to PIAAC (Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies), and presents the PIAAC-L data. PIAAC-L was a collaborative study by three large-scale surveys in Germany, PIAAC, the National Educational Panel Study (NEPS), and the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP). Respondents from the German PIAAC sample (2011/2012) and the adult members of their ho…

Literacy skills predict probability of refusal in follow-up wave
Selective nonresponse can introduce bias in longitudinal surveys. The present study examines the role of cognitive skills (more specifically, literacy skills), as measured in large-scale assessment surveys, in selective nonresponse in longitudinal surveys. We assume that low-skilled respondents perceive the cognitive assessment as a higher burden than higher-skilled respondents because they are more likely to experience negative feelings. We hypo…
Doing Age and Doing Desire in and Through Film. Queer Perspectives on Gender, Aging, and Desire
In recent years a growing number of films on and with elderly people have been produced. Love and desire are central features of some of these films although more often heterosexual than homosexual. In our paper we would like to address the intersections of doing age and doing desire in five films that have recently been produced. By analysing the films we will develop a taxonomy of the various forms of desire displayed. Yet, we will also show ho…
The association between personality and cognitive ability
To examine the relationship between the Big Five and cognitive ability, we investigated whether we could replicate in a heterogeneous population sample the positive association between cognitive ability and Openness and Emotional Stability and its negative association with Conscientiousness. Besides analyzing the pure associations, we shed further light on sources of these associations by investigating potential moderating effects of education an…
Are Incentive Effects on Response Rates and Nonresponse Bias in Large-scale, Face-to-face Surveys Generalizable to Germany? Evidence from Ten Experiments
In survey research, a consensus has grown regarding the effectiveness of incentives encouraging survey participation across different survey modes and target populations. Most of this research has been based on surveys from the United States, whereas few studies have provided evidence that these results can be generalized to other contexts. This paper is the first to present comprehensive information concerning the effects of incentives on respon…
