  • Relationship between self-assessed health and life satisfaction in older adults: The moderating role of ego-resiliency

    Open Access•Wacław Bąk, Donat Dutkiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Ageing and Society•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 43

The present study was focused on the relationship between the subjective assessment of physical health and satisfaction with life (SWL) in older adults. The relationship itself was found in previous studies, but we postulated that it is moderated by ego-resiliency (ER). To verify this hypothesis, 124 Polish participants aged between 60 and 89 (mean = 71.72, standard deviation = 7.08) were asked to complete questionnaire measures of: self-assessed…

  • Adaptive self-concept: Identifying the basic dimensions of self-beliefs

Tomasz Jankowski, Wacław Bąk et al.•ARTICLE•Self and Identity•2021

We present three studies aimed to identify the adaptive properties of self-concept and to develop a brief questionnaire to measure them. In the first study, we identified five basic facets of adaptive self-concept (ASC): clarity, non-ruminative self-awareness, self-distance, openness to self-relevant information, and modifiability of the self-concept. The second study confirmed the five-factor structure of the ASC. In the third study, we tested r…

  • Self-Standards in Late Adulthood. Perceived Health as a Moderator of the Relationship Between Self-Discrepancy and Affect

Open Access•Wacław Bąk, Donat Dutkiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Polish Psychological Bulletin•2020

Four types of self-standards (ideal, ought, undesired, and forbidden selves) were analyzed in the context of self-assessed health of older adults. We focused on the relationships between self-discrepancies (perceived actualization of self-standards) and affect, as well as the content of self-descriptions of standards. Participants (116 Polish older adults) completed: Self Standards’ Measure (SSM), PANAS-X and 7 items from the WHOQOL-BREF. First, …

  • Possible Selves: Implications for Psychotherapy

    Open Access•Wacław Bąk•ARTICLE•International Journal of Mental…•2015

The paper is devoted to the therapeutic applications of theories and research concerning self-regulation issues. The key concept here is possible selves, defined as an element of self-knowledge that refers to what a person perceives as potentially possible. The main idea of using knowledge about possible selves in psychotherapy is based on their functions as standards in self-regulatory processes. The problem of the changeability of possible selv…

  • The Dialogical Self: Research and Applications

Open Access•Anna Batory, Wacław Bąk et al.•ARTICLE•Psychology of Language and…•2010

The Dialogical Self: Research and Applications The paper presents dialogical self theory and its current theoretical and empirical status. We start with some inspirations from philosophy and literature and then describe the main thesis of the theory - self-multiplicity conceptualized in terms of I-positions and the dynamic relations between them. In the next section we present examples of empirical explorations of inner dialogical activity. Altho…
