Cultural adaptation of the lower-risk gambling guidelines
The Lower-Risk Gambling Guidelines (LRGG) represent a milestone in translating empirical evidence on gambling-related harm into public health guidance. As they are implemented internationally, contextual adaptation is essential to ensure relevance and effectiveness. This commentary discusses Finland's adaptation, which adjusted the expenditure threshold from 1% of household gross income to 2% of personal net income. Drawing on Finnish research, w…

Young adults’ risk profiles and predictive factors of Problematic Social Media Use (PSMU)
Problematic social media use (PSMU) is a current public health concern. The current study aimed to identify the risk profiles and predictive factors of PSMU among young Finnish adults using a cross-sectional design. Survey data were analysed with K-means clustering and logistic regression, revealing three profiles: high-risk (HRG), moderate-risk (MRG), and low-risk (LRG) groups. The HRG was characterized by low conscientiousness and self-esteem, …
Methodologies and estimates of social costs of gambling
The definition and measurement of social costs has been debated in gambling literature. Predominant framings of gambling have depicted it as a leisure activity without significant costs other than those caused directly by problem gambling. This view has been recently challenged with a public health perspective, adopting a wider definition of social costs that span beyond issues related to treatment and crime. Definitional debates have resulted in…

Perceptions of health changes and support for self-limiting social media use among young adults in Finland—A qualitative study
Despite increasing research attention given to problematic technology use, the perceptions of individuals who experience related issues remain largely unknown. In particular, qualitative insight into actual help-seekers’ experiences of problematic social media use, which currently holds a subdiagnostic status, is lacking. The present study responds to this research gap with an inductive content analysis of 11 semistructured interviews with young …

Establishing Academic Burnout’s Relationship with Problematic Internet Use and Specific Health-Risk Behaviours
Problematic Internet use is recognised as an emerging public health issue, particularly among young adults. Yet, there is scarce information on problematic Internet use as a predictor for academic burnout. This study aimed to identify academic burnout’s association with both problematic Internet use and specific health-risk behaviour among higher education students. We analysed the population-based cross-sectional survey data (with post-stratific…

Association between psychosocial well-being and problematic social media use among Finnish young adults
The aim of the study was to identify associations between problematic social media use (PSMU), type of internet activity, various background factors, psychosocial factors (mood, fear of missing out, need to belong, social relationships) and the COVID-19-pandemic’s impacts on social media use among young adults in Finland. Data were collected from 381 young adults aged 18–35 (M = 26.01; SD = 4.55) in Finland through a web-based survey conducted du…

Risk Factors for Excessive Social Media Use Differ from Those of Gambling and Gaming in Finnish Youth
Adolescent girls are at greater risk of excessive social media use than boys, while boys are at greater risk of excessive gaming and gambling. The associations with known risk factors are somewhat different for excessive use of social media as compared to excessive gambling and gaming and should be acknowledged when developing preventive measures for adolescents

Online betting intensity is linked with Extraversion and Conscientiousness
INTRODUCTION: Extraversion and Conscientiousness are well-studied personality traits associated with reward processing and goal prioritization, respectively, and bear on individual differences in financial risk-taking. Using unique large datasets, we investigated the link between these traits and male online gamblers' actual betting participation and intensity. METHOD: We combined datasets containing online horse betting data (during 2015-2016) f…

How to Support Prison Workers’ Perceived Readiness to Identify and Respond to Possible Gambling Problems
Problem gambling is known to be prevalent among prisoners. However, it is not systematically screened and often remains undetected. This pilot study explores prison workers’ ( N = 21) knowledge, views, and opinions about problem gambling in two Finnish prisons with a view to improving training and to developing better guidelines for identifying and responding to gambling problems. Four-fifths (81%) of prison workers considered problem gambling a …
Gambling expenditure by game type among weekly gamblers in Finland
It seems that overall gambling frequency is the strongest indicator of high gambling expenditure. Our results showed that different game types had different effect sizes on gambling expenditure. Weekly gambling on horse races and non-monopoly games had the greatest increasing effect on expenditure. However, different game types also varied based on their popularity. The extent of potential harms caused by high expenditure therefore also varies on…
Attitudes towards gambling, gambling participation, and gambling-related harm
Attitudes towards gambling became more positive in all except the youngest age groups. Under-age male gambling continued to decrease. We need to make decision-makers better aware of the continuing growth of online gambling among older people and women's increasing experiences of gambling-related harm. This is vital to ensure more effective prevention
Teacher Awareness and Attitudes Regarding Adolescent Risk Behaviours
Empirical evidence has shown that youth gamble on both regulated and unregulated games, despite legislative prohibitions. This study assesses middle and high school teachers' awareness and attitudes regarding adolescent gambling and other potentially high-risk behaviours in Finland. A convenience sample of teachers ( N = 157) from 13 provinces participated in the survey. The results suggest that teachers in Finland were more knowledgeable of the …
Attitudes towards gambling in Finland
The association between young age, male gender, high net income and risky alcohol consumption, and favourable gambling attitudes was strong, and also reflects risky gambling behaviour. Experiencing gambling-related harms caused by one's own or significant other's excessive gambling seems to indicate unfavourable attitudes towards gambling
Concerned significant others of people with gambling problems in Finland
CSOs of problem gamblers often experience cumulating problems such as their own risky gambling behaviour, health problems and other addictive disorders. The clearest gender difference was seen in smoking by CSO. In order to develop efficient and targeted support and services for CSOs, it is necessary to understand the correlates related to different subgroups of CSOs
An analysis of problem gambling among the Finnish working-age population
Gambling problems affect tens of thousands of individuals annually, therefore certain vulnerabilities should be noted. Comorbid dependencies, smoking in particular, ought to be screened for and recognised in the public health sector. Regulating the availability of slot machine gambling and enforcement of the age limit should be acknowledged. In establishing new gambling venues, prevalence rates in those particular areas should be actively monitor…
