Prehistoric shore environments, shellfish availability, and shellfish gathering at Franchthi, Greece
People who exploit marine resources choose among them according to technological, economic, and social considerations. Prehistoric selectivity in their exploitation has often been postulated, but can be established only by comparing the archaeological record with an estimate of the kinds and quantities available in the environments of the time. Only then can those factors be considered that might have influenced their choice, a subject which is t…
Coastal Paleogeography of the Central and Western Mediterranean during the Last 125,000 Years and Its Archaeological Implications
In this paper we present paleogeographic maps of the central and western Mediterranean for 18,000 B.P. at the height of the last glacial maximum, and for 9,000 B.P. near the end of the rapid phase of the postglacial rise of the sea. Sea-level data for the past 125,000 years indicate that, in addition, the 18,000 B.P. map reasonably represents preceding cold stadials, while the 9,000 B.P. map depicts the configuration of intervening warm periods. …
Late Paleolithic and Mesolithic Coastlines of Greece and the Aegean
Reconstructions of the late Quaternary paleogeography of Greece and the Aegean show that at 18,000 years B.P. the northern Aegean and northern Adriatic formed large coastal plains traversed by many rivers. Broad plains also existed off the coast of Elis and the present Gulf of Korinth, and along the Anatolian coast. Many islands, such as Kerkira, Euboea, and the northern Sporadhes, were connected with the mainland, and most of the Cycladic island…
