From human to posthuman bias: Mapping discrimination in futuristic societies through speculative fiction
This study investigates the morphologies of bias in speculative fiction that depict futures populated by augmented humans, artificial intelligences, sentient machines, other posthuman entities, and algorithmically governed societies. It maps how traditional vectors of discrimination, such as race, gender, class, color, creed, and species, are reimagined, displaced, or re-entrenched in these fictional worlds. The study addresses bias through three…

Indian validation of Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale in Hindi among adults
Rosenberg’s Self-esteem Scale (RSES) is one of the most widely used measures to assess the self-esteem of an individual. Surprisingly, an Hindi version of RSES (RSES-H) has not been made available and validated yet. Thus the objective of the present study was to translate the RSES into Hindi and validate among adults by conducting two different studies. In study 1, RSES was translated into Hindi language, reliability and validity were established…
Quotidian Language Practices as Silent Enforcers of Caste Discrimination in India
In Indian society, the caste system profoundly influences cultural norms and social interactions, manifesting through various facets of life including language. This article explores the intersection of caste and language, focusing on how linguistic practices both reflect and perpetuate caste identities and inequalities. Caste, though a social construct rather than an inherent attribute, continues to shape social dynamics through established norm…
Construction and Consolidation of Caste System Through Ideological State Apparatuses: A Study of Girish Karnad’s Talé-Dan ̇d ̇a
This article critically examines Girish Karnad’s play Talé-Dan ̇d ̇a as a lens through which the construction and consolidation of the caste system in India is explored. The study focuses on the utilization of ideological state apparatuses (ISA) by the ‘upper-caste’ to suppress attempts at social reform and the creation of a casteless society. By analysing the characters and their interactions within the play, the article argues that repressive a…

Exploring the Transformative Potential and the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Vauhini Vara’s The Immortal King Rao
Artificial Intelligence (AI), an ever-evolving technological frontier, stands poised at the nexus of human ingenuity and innovation, catalyzing transformative shifts across myriad facets of contemporary existence. Since its inception in the mid-20th century, AI has evolved from rudimentary algorithms to sophisticated neural networks, becoming ubiquitous. From shaping the way we communicate and conduct research to bolstering security measures and …

A comparative study of the outcomes of endoscopic septoplasty with conventional septoplasty
Background Deviated nasal septum is common problem in otolaryngorhinological practice. This study was mainly undertaken to compare the advantages and disadvantages of endoscopic septoplasty over conventional septoplasty. Material and methods A prospective study was undertaken in 60 patients attending ENT OPD in a tertiary care centre. The sample was selected by using non-probability convenient sampling technique. Equal number of patients were ran…

Nature and determinants of migration: Insights from NSSO data in three states of India
The exodus of men is the most opted strategy adopted by rural households to diversify income and reduce risks associated with agriculture. Migration plays a very important role in reducing the liquidity and credit constraints of rural households in India. Data shows there are roughly 30 per cent internal migrants in the country. Despite the existence of studies on patterns and determinants of migration in various out-migrating states such as Utta…

Credit constraints and Rural Migration: Evidence from Six Villages in Uttar Pradesh
Rural economies in developing countries are often characterized by credit constraints. Although few attempts have been made to understand the trends and patterns of male out-migration from Uttar Pradesh (UP), there is dearth of literature on the linkage between credit accessibility and male migration in rural Uttar Pradesh. The present study tries to fill this gap. The objective of this study is to assess the role of credit accessibility in deter…
Clinico-epidemiological analysis of Post kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) cases in India over last two decades: A hospital based retrospective study
PKDL patients tend to delay reporting and are often misdiagnosed. Confirmatory diagnosis using minimally invasive skin slit aspirate samples would help overcome such issues. There was a paradigm shift in compliance with miltefosine; however, increasing relapse rate indicated the need for newer therapies with oral formulations
Influence of crustal aerosols on wet deposition at a rural site of North-East India
A total of 42 rain water samples were collected for a period of one year, March 2005 to February 2006, at Jorhat, a rural site of North-East India. The pH of the samples varied from 4.1 to 7.1 with a mean 5.5 showing the acidic nature of rainwater with reference to 5.6 (natural pH of rain water due to CO2 equilibrium in the atmosphere). More than 50% of the rain events have been found to be acidic. Mean concentrations of major ions in the rain wa…
