The effect of government corruption on the efficiency of US commercial airports
Tobin’s q and Airline Performances
This article studies the performance of the global airline industry by applying Tobin’s q, a financial market-based measure of firm value, as the primary measure. With 27 airlines from Asia Pacific, Europe, and North America over the period of 1989 to 1999 we find that the industry on average is a low q ratio industry, and European carriers generally have lower q values relative to their counterparts in the other two regions. There is a general p…
Competition and Allocative Efficiency
This study investigates the effect of competition on the productive efficiency of the U.S. telephone industry, taking into account the fact that the industry was subject to rate-of-return regulation. It is shown that competition induces the incumbents to use capital inputs closer to the unconstrained optima, thereby reducing the allocative inefficiency caused by the Averch-Johnson effect. This effect is in addition to the usual technical efficien…
A Note on Capacity Utilization and Measurement of Scale Economies
This article investigates the measurement of returns to scale (RTS) via a cost function in the presence of quasi-fixed inputs. Caves, Christensen, and Swanson (CCS) proposed estimation of a variable-cost function and derived a formula for computing RTS from it. This article extends the CCS results by (a) investigating the bias that would result from erroneously using a total-cost function for measuring RTS, (b) indicating that the CCS procedure f…
