  • The effect of e‐cigarette taxes on pre‐pregnancy and prenatal smoking

Open Access•Rahi Abouk, Scott Adam et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Policy Analysis and…•2023

E-cigarette taxes are an active area of legislation and have important regulatory implications by proxying e-cigarette accessibility. We examine the effect of e-cigarette taxes on prepregnancy and prenatal smoking using the near-universe of births to mothers conceiving between 2013 and 2019 in the United States. Using fixed effect regressions, we show that e-cigarette taxes increase prepregnancy and prenatal smoking. We also find evidence that e-…

  • Creativity in Electrical Engineering Degree Programs

Open Access•Andrew Valentine, Iouri Belski et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Transactions on Education•2019

Contribution: This paper demonstrated on a large scale that explicit articulation of creativity-related learning goals on engineering syllabi is quite limited, and primarily limited to the first year of study. Engineering educators may need to do more to ensure creativity is explicitly addressed as an expected learning outcome within engineering syllabi. Background: Prior studies have shown inclusion of creativity within engineering syllabi and c…

  • Minimum Wages and Alcohol-Related Traffic Fatalities among Teens

Scott Adam, Scott Adams et al.•ARTICLE•The Review of Economics and…•2012

Using cross-state variation in minimum wages, we observe a positive relationship between the minimum wage and the number of alcohol-related accidents involving teen drivers. A similar effect is not observed when examining accidents among adults. The results are consistent with a positive income elasticity for alcoholic beverages and driving activities among young people, in particular for consumption out of discretionary income accorded by higher…

  • Perceived Racism as a Predictor of Paranoia Among African Americans

    Open Access•Dennis R Combs, David L Penn et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Black Psychology•2006•Cited by: 7•References: 54

Recent theoretical models suggest that perceived racism acts as a stressor for African Americans and may be associated with a variety of negative psychological consequences, notably paranoia. Paranoia among African Americans is believed to reflect the lower end of the paranoia continuum based on experiences with racism. Thus, it may be beneficial to measure paranoia on a continuum, but few studies have adopted this strategy. This study examined t…

  • The Economic Effects of Living Wage Laws

    Open Access•Scott Adam, Scott Adams et al.•ARTICLE•Urban Affairs Review•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 5

Nearly 100 cities and local governments in the United States passed living wage laws since the mid-1990s. The central goal of living wages is to reduce poverty, yet they may fail to do so because of disemployment effects. We summarize and critique the existing research on the effects of living wages on wages, employment, and family income, emphasizing common findings, points of disagreement, and important questions for future research. The eviden…

  • Analyzing Narratives in Psychotherapy

Robert L Russell, Paul Van Den Broek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Narrative and Life…•1993

Narration in psychotherapy has become a key area of theoretical and empiri-cal concern. Rationales for this new concern are provided in the context of introducing a three-dimensional model of narrative structure. Numerous measures corresponding to each dimension are operationally defined and used in an illustrative study of 16 pairs of temporally contiguous child-thera-pist stories sampled from Gardner's (1971) Therapeutic Communication with Chil…
