This article discusses the establishment, in 1997, of "convict criminology," a group of scholars producing research informed by their experiences of crime and the criminal justice process; that is, either those who have served time themselves or who have operated alongside prisoners as professionals in custodial settings. It is argued that such scho…

Kentucky is currently facing a severe budget crisis and is seeking ways to lower its prison and community corrections costs. This article focuses on our study of the prison and parole experience of men and women in Kentucky. What we found is a virtual "perpetual incarceration machine" where prisoners are recycled from prison to parole and back to prison. Behind Bars: Surviving Prison is a US-based peer-written book designed to fill this gap. Interestingly, though, when explaining who the audience of the book is, the authors say of content of the book that it covers what “you need to know it before you’re arrested, not after. After you’re arrested it will be too late, because the journey to prison may have already begun.”
