Beyond the Trump Presidency
How closely related are modern anti-democratic beliefs among white Americans, and to what extent are these beliefs shaped by exclusionary racial attitudes? Using data from the Political Unrest Study, the Collaborative Multiracial Post-Election Survey (CMPS), Democracy Fund + UCLA Nationscape, and the Survey of the Performance of American Elections (SPAE), we find that support for voting restrictions, opposition to voting expansions, belief in wid…
To Elect or Appoint? Evidence from Local Election Administration
Do elected or appointed local officials produce better outcomes for their constituents? Elections should improve representation by providing a direct link to voters. However, some argue that citizens have too little information to select good leaders and hold them accountable, especially at the local level. In order to assess these conflicting claims, I examine the performance of local election officials, an office that has come under immense str…
The Global Legislators Database
This article describes the Global Legislators Database, a new cross-national dataset on the characteristics – party affiliation, gender, age, education, and occupational background – of nearly 20,000 national parliamentarians in the world’s democracies. The database includes 97 electoral democracies with comprehensive information on legislators who held office in each country’s lower or unicameral chamber during one legislative session in 2015, 2…
How Partisan Is Local Election Administration
In the United States, elections are often administered by directly elected local officials who run as members of a political party. Do these officials use their office to give their party an edge in elections? Using a newly collected dataset of nearly 5,900 clerk elections and a close-election regression discontinuity design, we compare counties that narrowly elect a Democratic election administrator to those that narrowly elect a Republican. We …
The Effects of Proportional Representation on Election Lawmaking
It is widely recognised that politicians are self-interested and desire election rules beneficial to their re-election. Although partisanship in electoral system reform is well-understood, the factors that affect partisan manipulation of other democratic ‘rules of the game’–including election administration, franchise laws, and campaign finance–has received little attention to date. New Zealand is so far the only established democracy to shift fr…
Black Lives Matter and the Racialized Support for the January 6th Insurrection
Does support for the January 6th insurrection come mostly from concerned citizens worried over illegal voting, or from racists spurred to action by the highly visible Black Lives Matter protests and Donald Trump's 2020 defeat? We field a survey experiment aimed at disentangling links between old and new racial grievances, anti-immigrant beliefs, Black activism, and support for the January 6th insurrection. We find that the people most likely to b…

Re-Evaluating consensus in New Zealand election reform
It is commonly believed that a norm of consensus-based election reform exists in New Zealand. However, this belief has yet to be tested with systematic study of changes to the democratic rules of the game. This article empirically analyzes the extent to which partisan and restrictive election rules have been proposed and enacted since passage of the Electoral Act 1956. Using a novel matrix of election lawmaking, a wealth of primary textual source…
P1-309 Differences in radiological patterns, tumour characteristics and diagnostic precision between digital mammography and screen-film mammography in four breast cancer screening programs in Spain
Introduction Since 2000 Digital Mammography (DM) has been commercially available and implemented in many breast cancer screening programs. Although available information suggests that differences, if exist, are low, complete evaluation of DM is needed to perform a more accurate balance of risks and benefits of these programs. Our purpose was to compare tumour characteristics between cancers detected with Screen-Film Mammography (SFM) and DM, and …
P1-132 Description of a nationwide and multidisciplinary project for the evaluation of interval breast cancer rates, determinants and characteristics, in Spain. Inca study
Introduction Interval cancer (IC) rate, risk factors and biological characteristics have been scarcely evaluated. In January 2010 started a multicentric project with the aim to estimate rates and determinants of IC and to compare their characteristics with those detected in the routine screening mammography. Methods Information from women aged 45/50 to 69, participating in seven population-based screening programs in Spain from January 2000 to De…
