  • Agonistic behavior and social reactivity of LG/J mice in both an arena and a seminatural setting

    Open Access•John C Wright, Edward C Simmel•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•1976•References: 2

In order to determine the relatively long-term effects of having been primed for agonistic behaviors in an arena setting, 28 male LG/J mice were observed for these behaviors in a seminatural environment for a period of 5 days following a 20 min arena test. The mice were first placed in an arena in which they were allowed either immediate physical contact with another strain (control condition) or were briefly separated from another strain by a tr…

  • Social Facilitation of Exploratory Behavior in Rats

    Open Access•Edward C Simmel, D Phillip Mcgee•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1966

In a replication of an earlier study, with minor modifications of apparatus and an increase of trial durations from 4 to 6 min., 6 male albino rats (Group A) who had previously explored a novel stimulus were run with 6 rats who had not. When compared with 6 rats (Group B) who had explored the stimulus and were then run with 6 Ss who had equivalent experience, Group A Ss showed significantly more exploratory responses than Group B Ss ( p = > .001)…

  • Visual vs Locomotor Response Effects on Satiation to Novel Stimuli

    Open Access•Edward C Simmel, John H Cheney et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1965

To determine the relative effects of visual and locomotor exploration on satiation of responses to a novel stimulus, 28 male and 28 female rats were each randomly assigned to one of 4 groups: held vs not held in a small container, with the stimulus either present or absent, in a 2 × 2 × 2 design. In a subsequent free exploration test using the same stimulus, it was found that females made more exploratory responses than males ( p < .001), and hol…
