  • No particularly negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the mental health of individuals with higher levels of childhood trauma

Open Access•Elisabeth M Weiss, Andreas Fink et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The findings of this study do not support the hypothesis that the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately exacerbated mental health problems in individuals with a history of moderate to severe childhood trauma. Instead, our results suggest that the pandemic's impact on mental health was more pronounced in students with no or only mild childhood trauma

  • Evaluation of the effectiveness of a 7-week minimal guided and unguided cognitive behavioral therapy-based stress-management APP for students

Open Access•Elisabeth M Weiss, Michael Harder et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2025

Stress during academic training is a significant issue for students, which intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Internet-based stress management programs are an attractive, low-threshold and cost-effective option for students at universities. The present randomized controlled intervention study examined the efficacy of a newly developed seven-week minimal guided (with optional e-Coach support) and unguided stress management training (iSMT) A…

  • The added value of game elements

Open Access•Manuel Ninaus, Rodolpho Cortez et al.•ARTICLE•Educational Technology Research…•2023

Even though game elements can increase motivation and engagement, they also might distract learners and thereby decrease performance and learning outcomes. In the current study, we investigated the effects of intrinsically integrated game elements on performance and learning outcomes. In a pre-post training study, 85 adult participants were randomly assigned either to the game-based or non-game-based training condition. Participants trained their…

  • Acute Effects of a Short Bout of Physical Activity on Cognitive Function in Sport Students

Open Access•Martin Niedermeier, Elisabeth M Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Physical activity is a promising intervention to restore cognitive function after prolonged sedentary periods. However, little is known about the effect of short physical activity bouts on cognition especially among individuals that are used to physical activity. Therefore, the goal of the present study was to assess the impact of a single ten-minute physical activity bout on the cognitive domain of visual attention compared to sedentary behavior…

  • The propensity to perceive meaningful coincidences is associated with increased posterior alpha power during retention of information in a modified Sternberg paradigm

    Open Access•Christian Rominger, A Fink et al.•ARTICLE•Consciousness and Cognition•2019

  • Serotonin transporter genotype (5-HTTLPR) and electrocortical responses indicating the sensitivity to negative emotional cues

Open Access•Ilona Papousek, Eva M Reiser et al.•ARTICLE•Emotion•2013

Growing literature indicates that emotional reactivity and regulation are strongly linked to genetic modulation of serotonergic neurotransmission. However, until now, most studies have focused on the relationship between genotypic markers, in particular the serotonin transporter-linked polymorphic region (5-HTTLPR), and neural structures using MRI. The current study aimed to bridge the gap between the relevant MRI literature on the effects of the…

  • From Ice Age to Madagascar

    Elisabeth M Weiss, Bianca Gschaidbauer et al.•ARTICLE•Humor - International Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 5•References: 3

The aim of the present study was to examine whether children with Asperger's syndrome differ from typically developing children in the appreciation of and behavioral responses to simple slapstick type humor, in which cognitive requirements that are commonly impaired in autism spectrum disorders are reduced to a minimum. Short slapstick scenes and matched non-humorous control scenes were extracted from popular movies to produce an appropriate humo…

  • The Impact of Mild Cognitive Impairment on Decision Making in Two Gambling Tasks

Laura Zamarian, Elisabeth M Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2010•References: 1

In the decision under ambiguity task (IGT), MCI patients experienced difficulties in learning from feedback and in maintaining an advantageous strategy over time. In the decision under risk task (PAG-R), patients had problems in integrating information from different sources and in adapting their strategy to changes in the decision situation. In summary, MCI patients present difficulties in advantageous decision making that resemble those reporte…

  • The relationship between history of violent and criminal behavior and recognition of facial expression of emotions in men with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder

    Open Access•Elisabeth M Weiss, Christian G Kohler et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2006•References: 53

Social psychological research underscores the relation between aggression and emotion. Specifically, regulating negative affect requires the ability to appraise restraint-producing cues, such as facial signs of anger, fear and other emotions. Individuals diagnosed with major mental disorders are more likely to have engaged in violent behavior than mentally healthy members of the same communities. We examined whether violent and criminal behavior …

  • Geschlechtsunterschiede kognitiver Leistungen - populärwissenschaftliche Stereotypien oder evidenzbasierte Studienergebnisse?

E Weiss, Elisabeth M Weiss et al.•ARTICLE•Fortschritte der Neurologie ·…•2005

Gender differences in neuropsychological functioning of patients with psychiatric disorders have been studied extensively in the last years. The available studies provide conflicting results, which can be attributed to the complexity of variables influencing cognitive sex differences. In this article we review the literature about gender differences in cognitive functions in healthy men and women and discuss the relevance of hormones, socio-cultu…
