Impacts of Centralized Intake on Drug and Alcohol Treatment Placement Decisions
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) and others have asserted that matching persons to an appropriate level of care will result in more positive and cost-effective treatment outcomes. The Center for Substance Abuse Treatment, through its Target Cities demonstration project, proposed the implementation of centralized intake and the use of comprehensive standardized assessment procedures as mechanisms for improving the treatment proces…
Impact of Centralized Intake on Case Management Services
The Chicago Target Cities demonstration project was designed to improve the effectiveness and accessibility of substance abuse treatment in large metropolitan areas. The primary interventions included centralized intake (CIU), comprehensive standardized assessment procedures, and management of a centralized wait list. A part of this project, the effectiveness of a case management model implemented through the CIU, was tested. Participants were ra…
Double standards for sexual jealousy
Sexual jealousy in young women and men
Two studies compared judgments about aggressive components of jealous reactions to the partner and to the rival, specifically, emotional (anger), cognitive (blame), and behavioral components. The first study randomly assigned 172 young women and men to two questionnaires on jealous reactions to mild (flirting) and serious (cheating) transgressions. One questionnaire assessed standards for appropriate behavior and perceptions of how people usually…
The psychological foundations of the affective lexicon
Theoretical vs. actuarial analyses of personality ratings, and other rudimentary distinctions
In their respective attempts to identify the “critical flaws” in Lamiell, Foss, Trierweiler, and Leffel's research on the role of dialectical reasoning in intuitive personology, both Conger and Woody (1983; see preceding articles) err by obscuring a crucial distinction between judgments , which are mental phenomena, and ratings , which are behavioral phenomena. By elaborating this distinction in the present article, we explain, among other things…
Studies in intuitive personology from an idiothetic point of view
Following Lamiell's (1981) critique of the individual differences approach to the scientific study of personality, questions have arisen concerning ( a ) the nature of the empirical research to which the “idiotheric” framework he proposed as an alternative has thus far led, and ( b ) the wider theoretical implications of that research. The present article seeks to address these questions within the medium of research on the nature of the reasonin…
Toward a further understanding of the intuitive personologist
Despite significant advances over the past three decades in our understanding of the implicit personality theorist, some important questions remain, particularly as regards the nature of the underlying reasoning process by which subjectively meaningful personality impressions are formulated and expressed. The present article seeks to address this issue, with particular attention being given to the distinction between demonstrative and dialectical…
On the relationship between conceptual schemes and behaviour reports
The validity of the assertion that rated and self-reported behavior is “almost entirely under the influence of preexisting conceptual schemes” is questioned. It is argued that the approach previously used to test this thesis is inadequate, and an alternative approach is described. A comparison of findings obtained using the two approaches suggests that the thesis is in need of revision: The presumed correspondence is neither as high nor as consis…
