Inclusive Emergency Preparedness as a Lever for School Improvement
Emergency preparedness is a critical priority in schools as institutions seek to ensure the safety of students, including those with disabilities amid rising concerns over natural hazards, community violence, and public health crises. This mixed-methods study explores the relations between school personnel’s familiarity with Emergency Operations Plans (EOPs), often referred to as Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), and their perceived preparedness t…
Cognitive predictors of low-income preschoolers’ moral judgments about physical harm
This study sought to identify heterogeneous profiles of preschool children’s moral judgments and cognitive predictors of those profiles. Children ( N = 106, M age = 52.78 months, SD = 6.61 months) completed a prototypical moral harm interview (Killen et al., 2011) at T1 and T2 (six months later), the five-task Theory of Mind battery (Wellman & Liu, 2004) and two executive function tasks (Carlson & Moses, 2001; Gerstadt et al., 1994) at T1. Cluste…
Preschool Children’s Evaluations of Prototypic and Accidental Moral Transgressions Differ by Economic Strata
Research Findings: Research with older children and adults reliably demonstrates that individuals raised in poverty tend to evaluate concerns related to moral concerns (i.e., related to harm, welfare, and justice) differently than do wealthier individuals. However, little work has examined these patterns in young children. Children (N=214, Mage = 53.30 months, SD = 18.3 months) completed tasks regarding accidental and prototypic moral transgressi…
Multidimensional profiles of Head Start children's social behaviors predict their interpretations of physical aggression
Preschool children's reasoning regarding moral events differs according to adversity and relates to aggression. Understanding morality in young children is paramount for understanding their aggressive behaviors. The study aims to identify patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior using Latent Class Analysis (LCA) and investigate how patterns of aggression and prosocial behavior relate to reasoning about prototypic moral events. One hundred si…
