  • Praising a Ruler and His City, Raising Support for the Second Crusade – an Overlooked Short Text on Baldwin I Re-Examined

    Open Access•Anna Gutgarts, Susan B Edgington•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2026

This article re-examines a short Latin text on Baldwin I of Jerusalem, known as the Petite chronique, through its manuscript tradition, narrative structure, and historical context. Hitherto largely overlooked, the text merits renewed attention for what it reveals about ideological and historiographical shifts after the First Crusade, especially following the fall of Edessa. Analysis of the text and its manuscript witnesses suggests that it origin…

  • History and Archeology of Urban Decline

Open Access•Anna Gutgarts, Ronnie Ellenblum•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban History•2024

In this article, we suggest a new analysis of the decline and abandonment of medieval urban landscapes, using as a case study the thoroughly excavated and documented Caelian Hill in Rome during the eleventh century, supported by notions from modern studies of climate change. We provide evidence for the concurrent decline of the urban landscape and the abandonment of waterways, including the aqueduct of Aqua Claudia that functioned since the first…

  • Lost in Time

Allegra Fryxell, Anna Gutgarts et al.•ARTICLE•Global Intellectual History•2022•References: 44

In this article, we locate a tendency to revert to ‘Western,’ ‘national,’ and/or ‘racial’ times during periods of intense uncertainty or ‘crisis’ when individuals and societies seek to make sense of the present through the past, drawing upon the concept of a ‘time-border.’ We suggest this tendency is a ‘conventional’ pull in temporal thinking that has recurred in modern time cultures. In our own present, this reversion appears to be occurring des…

  • Between violent outbreaks and legal disputes

    Anna Gutgarts•ARTICLE•Journal of Medieval History•2021•Cited by: 2

Focusing on the case of Frankish Jerusalem, this article engages with recent advances in the study of medieval urban conflicts in order to shed new light on their role in socio-ethnically heterogeneous urban environments, such as those formed in the Latin East. It examines several episodes of conflict that occurred in Jerusalem between the 1130s and the 1150s, involving key figures in the city's institutions and population. I propose an analytica…

  • Shaping society and urban fabric in Crusader Jerusalem

    Open Access•Anna Gutgarts•ARTICLE•Urban History•2019•References: 5

This study addresses the interplay between the formation of civic society and urban development in the Latin East, particularly in the city of Jerusalem. It argues that while the municipal mechanisms that were formed in Jerusalem during the first half of the twelfth century drew on Western European models, they were adapted to meet the challenges of the young capital of the Latin Kingdom. The process revolves around the pivotal role of the patria…
