Exploring the factors that prevent or facilitate palliative care at ‘home’ for adults experiencing structural vulnerability: A scoping review
While most people express a preference to be cared for and die at home, not all people have access to a safe or stable home. Government policies often position home death as a proxy measure of quality end-of-life care, yet structurally vulnerable populations, including those who are precariously housed, homeless, or living in supportive or transitional housing, are frequently excluded from this possibility. This scoping review aims to summarize t…
The Suffix -ster in Present-Day English: A Usage-Based and Network Model Account
In this article, the authors provide an analysis of the present-day distribution of the -ster suffix in English and account for that distribution through the diachronic forces that shaped it. Taking a constructional approach reveals that words with the -ster suffix in Middle English constituted a semantically coherent set in so far as the items in that set mostly referred to professions. In the latter part of the first half of the Modern English …
An Exploration of How Parents Did Waiting for Their Child's Transplant: Inpatient, Outpatient, and Home Space-Times
Current evidence shows that waiting for a child's solid organ, stem cell, or bone marrow transplant can cause social, emotional, and psychological suffering for children and their families. Despite waiting being a central theme, little research has investigated what families do while they are waiting in hospital and home settings and what daily life looks like in these contexts. This narrative ethnographic study explored what waiting may look lik…
Parents' experiences of waiting for their child's transplant: A focus on how healthcare providers can impact the waiting process
Waiting for a child transplant is a form of suffering for parents, yet little research has explored how parents experience waiting and how healthcare providers can impact their waiting experiences. The purpose of this article is to investigate how parents experienced the process of waiting for their child's transplant with a specific focus on the impact of healthcare providers on parents' experience of waiting. Six parents from four different fam…
The Sensory Experience of Waiting for Parents of Children Awaiting Transplant: A Narrative Ethnography
Despite the senses being a valuable source of knowledge, little research has explored the sensory process of medical experiences. This narrative ethnographic study investigated how the senses shaped parents’ experiences of waiting for their child to receive a solid organ, stem cell, or bone marrow transplant. Six parents from four different families primarily participated in sensory interviews as well as observations that explored the question: H…
The movement and translation of drug policy ideas: The case of ‘new recovery’
Avada kedavra: Disenchantment, empathy, and leaving ethnography
Exiting long-term ethnographic research is occasionally fraught with a litany of professional, ethical, and existential dilemmas. As ethnographers in physical cultural studies (PCS) attest, participation with people in the field over the long term writes a researcher rather deeply. Being personally contoured by a physical culture under study can enchant a researcher as new physical experiences occur, meaningful social bonds are forged, affective …
A critical and historical investigation into semantic prosody
While existing literature on cause frequently cites the negative meaning associated with that lexeme, i.e. the fact that cause tends to appear with a negative outcome, e.g. cause an accident, really no scholar has studied in any detail the historical development of the phenomenon. In order to address this missing line of scholarship concerning the diachronic development of, what we refer to here as, a semantic prosody, this paper presents a fine-…
Grammaticalization
This article presents the study of grammaticalization within the fields of language change and variation, and historical linguistics. Grammaticalization has to do with the diachronic relationship between the lexicon and grammar and with stages of relatively greater and lesser grammaticality. The major effects of grammaticalization, e.g. phonological reduction, semantic generalization, and fusion (or bondedness) are reviewed. The various roles tha…
The history of be fixing to: Grammaticization, sociolinguistic distribution and emerging literary spaces
The be fixing to structure not only has a long and fascinating history but also a highly contemporary presence in Internet communication. The rise of the futurate verbal periphrasis be fixing to + V shows an essentially textbook example of grammaticization, not so different in many ways from the development of be going to . However, there are some important differences too. While be going to has a wide distribution among speakers of Englishes in …
The Development of the English Progressive
Invoking findings from studies on the grammaticization of tense/aspect meanings, I argue that semantic reconstruction of the Present Day English progressive from an often cited Old English construction ( beon + PAP) is semantically very unlikely. Instead I argue for a reconstruction of the progressive from a locative construction source of the type, be on hunting . However, as I also show, there is a kind of formal relationship between the presen…
