  • Hapū Wānanga: A Kaupapa Māori childbirth education class for Māori and non-Māori māmā hapū and whānau

Open Access•Nikki M Barrett, Lisette Burrows et al.•ARTICLE•MAI Journal A New Zealand Journal…•2022

Global studies attest that early engagement with childbirth education (CBE) classes enhances maternal and infant health outcomes. In Aotearoa New Zealand, Māori participation rates in CBE classes are lower than those of their non-Māori counterparts. Current CBE classes are designed and delivered using a predominantly Western medicalised approach that negates Māori birthing knowledge, expertise, and values. However, sporadically, Kaupapa Māori CBE…

  • The First Step to Learning Place Value: A Role for Physical Models

Open Access•Lei Yuan, Richard Prather et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Education•2021

Very few questions have cast such an enduring effect in cognitive science as the question of “symbol-grounding”: Do human-invented symbol systems have to be grounded to physical objects to gain meanings? This question has strongly influenced research and practice in education involving the use of physical models and manipulatives. However, the evidence on the effectiveness of physical models is mixed. We suggest that rethinking physical models in…

English In the context of ongoing internalized and structural forms of oppression in post-apartheid and post-colonial South Africa, social work education must be critical and engage with structural, modernist analysis and post-modern critical theory. This article explores how students experience a critical conscientization process as part of preparation for praxis which meets social change imperatives. French Dans un contexte où les formes d'oppr…

  • Priming overgeneralizations in two- and four-year-old children

    Open Access•LISA GERSHKOFF-STOWE, Lisa Gershkoff‐Stowe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Child Language•2006

Overgeneralization occurs when a child uses the wrong word to name an object and is often observed in the early stages of word learning. We develop a method to elicit overgeneralizations in the laboratory by priming children to say the names of objects perceptually similar to known and unknown target objects. Experiment 1 examined 18 two-year-old children's labelling of familiar and unfamiliar objects, using a name that was previously produced. E…
