  • Word order in Cherokee

Open Access•Becky Hsu, Brian Hsu et al.•ARTICLE•Language•2024

Although Cherokee is known to show highly flexible clausal word order, the principles that predict speakers' preferences among possible orders are not extensively described. This article presents a new description of the grammatical properties that predict clausal word order in spoken Cherokee, based on a corpus study of word-order variation. Our results show that the placement of nominal expressions relative to verbs, and the relative order of n…

  • Chromosome Aberrations in Lymphocytes of Patients Undergoing Radon Spa Therapy

Open Access•Nerea Paz, Carola Hartel et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

In the present exploratory study, we aim to elucidate the action of radon in vivo and to assess the possible health risks. Chromosome aberrations were analyzed in lymphocytes of two patients (P1, P2) undergoing radon spa therapy in Bad Steben (Germany). Both patients, suffering from painful chronic degenerative disorders of the spine and joints, received nine baths (1.2 kBq/L at 34 °C) over a 3-week period. Chromosome aberrations were analyzed be…

  • Eastern Cherokee Creation and Subsistence Narratives

    Open Access•John D Loftin, Benjamin E Frey et al.•ARTICLE•American Indian Culture and…•2019

Eastern Cherokees' mythic and legendary worldview, as refracted through sacred myth narratives, forms a living tradition which grounds their identity. In particular, the central sacred stories of their world—the Creation Myth, Kanati the Hunter, Selu the Corn Goddess, and Stone Coat—embody spiritual meanings, purposes, and values which actually orient the Eastern Cherokee lifeway. These spiritual peoples' traditional religious experience and expr…

  • Parasitic Gapping in Bilingual Grammar

Joshua Bousquette, Benjamin Frey et al.•ARTICLE•Heritage Language Journal•2016

We report on work with German-English bilinguals, heritage speakers of German, and their licensing of parasitic gaps (a type of multiple gap construction) in English-to-German translation tasks. English allows such constructions variably, while European German does not. While some recent work reports that some heritage speakers have difficulty licensing null elements generally, most of our speakers allow some gaps in German. Structurally, these g…

  • A Tale of Three Cities

Open Access•Felecia Lucht, Benjamin Frey et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Germanic Linguistics•2011

In the 19th and 20th centuries, eastern Wisconsin went from being heavily German speaking to almost entirely English speaking. The largest city, Milwaukee, is claimed to have experienced language shift more rapidly than the state's rural German communities. We examine this apparent asymmetry, comparing evidence for language shift in urban Milwaukee, the city of Watertown, and the small town of Lebanon, drawing on census data, reports on language …
