Japanese research on Chinese women's history: International Networks and Collaborative Projects
Japan stands at a crossroads position – geographically and intellectually – as a center for the study of China and East Asia. This short paper focuses on the roles Japanese scholars and research groups have played in the development of the study of Chinese women’s history. It first traces Japan’s role in transmitting Western approaches to education and women’s rights in the early twentieth century, then examines the development of the study of Ch…

Prostitution in a Small North China Town in the 1930s
Almost all of the studies of prostitution in Republican era China have focused on big cities. Using recently rediscovered field notes from a social survey of the small town of Gaoyang in Hebei province, this article describes the practice of prostitution in the mid-1930s and considers how small-town prostitution differed from that in big cities. The women working in the sex trade in Gaoyang were all “clandestine” or unregistered prostitutes, who …

The Event of ‘Charlie Hebdo: Imaginaries of Freedom and Control . Edited by Alessandro Zagato
It is worth underlining that this book does not focus on Charlie Hebdo itself, the milieu of bande dessinée, or the way the shootings happened; but rather on interpreting worldwide popular, political, and media reactions to the events of 7 January 2015. As Bruce Kapferer points out in the Afterword, the central theme is the ‘crisis of egalitarianism’ (p. 95), not surprising given that this is an offshoot of the European Research Council-funded Eg…
Revisiting the Kankō Chōsa Villages: A Review of Chinese and Japanese Studies of North China Rural Society
During the late 1930s and early 1940s Japanese researchers carried out a large and well-funded study of customary law in rural North China. The results of that research, published in the 1950s, have been one of the major sources for theories about prewar Chinese rural society. In the last twenty years Japanese and Chinese researchers have undertaken follow-up studies of the same villages. This review article introduces Chinese and Japanese follow…

The Idea of France in “Comics” Old and New
Drawing upon a methodology that presupposes a notion of “parallel mentalities” between past and present, this article will explore a number of text/image narratives representing the Idea of France. With reference also to the key notion of the superhero, examples discussed will include a 1594 depiction of Henri IV as Perseus, Renaud Sechan's 1975 Hexagone and its YouTube visualisation, and Vica's 1943 comic-strip Eiffel Tower personification in th…
Commercial Networks in Modern Asia
This volume brings together an international team of scholars who examine the development of commercial networks in Asia from the 18th century to the 20th century on a stage that stretches from Yokohama and Pusan to Istanbul. The studies, based on extensive archival research, focus on the trading firms and merchant groups that were the chief actors in the creation of the commercial networks that crisscrossed Asia, linking the various Asian econom…
Les Cases a l'ecran: Bande dessinee et cinema en dialogue
Until relatively recently a French book on bande dessinée (BD) and cinema would have been the exclusive domain of the coffee table. One can imagine glossy blow-ups of Jane Fonda and Barbarella, the visual evolution of Batman and Robin’s tights, and, more recently, the much mediatised Adèle Blanc-Sec/Louise Bourgoin in her bathtub. Adèle Blanc-Sec is the subject of one study in this volume, by François Amy de la Bretèque, but concern is with the f…

China, 1898-1912: The Xinzheng Revolution and Japan
Mountain Fires: The Red Army's Three-Year War in South China 1934-1938
In October 1934, the badly beaten Red Army set out on the Long March from southern and central China, leaving behind a rearguard to fight the overwhelming Nationalist government forces. Three bloody years followed, in which many guerrillas were killed, some abandoned the Revolution, and others deserted to the enemy. When survivors of the lost legions came down from their mountain hideouts in 1937, they regrouped as the New Fourth Army, whose reno…

From Feudalism to Capitalism: Japanese Scholarship on the Transformation of Chinese Rural Society
As American studies of Chinese revolution and Chinese rural society have advanced in past decade, many of us have become painfully aware of how poorly we understand world in which Chinese villagers lived, and manner in which that world changed in three or four centuries prior to Liberation. Few of us consciously think of Chinese peasanty as an undifferentiated mass, yet most of us still teach, and sometimes write, about the Chinese peasant. Most …
Creating a Northern Soviet
In summer 1932, the Chinese Communist party made its first serious attempt to apply the strategy of peasant-based soviet governments to the North China plains. Pressured by the Central Committee, which was trying to divert KMT military pressure from the surrounded soviets in Central and South China, the Hopei Party committee tried to set up a soviet government in several rural counties east of Baoding city. Although the peasant force of 700 to 80…
