  • Zum Sprachwandel und zur Interaktion von Sprachsystemen

    Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•Sociolinguistica - International…•2017

Es wird u.a. a…

  • Communication based on receptive multilingualism: Advantages and disadvantages

    Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This paper tries to give answers for successful receptive multilingualism (RM) but also for its failure. It is mainly based on the results of two projects, one on inter-dialectal communication in the Baltic area during the era of the Hanseatic League and the other analyses inter-Scandinavian communication today. The main purpose of this survey is to outline the essential preconditions for successful RM, from a linguistic, social and environmental…

Graeme Dunphy, Kurt Braunmuller et al.•REVIEW•The Modern Language Review•2008•Cited by: 1

This handbook is conceived as a comprehensive history of the North Germanic languages from the oldest times up to the present day. Whereas most of the traditional presentations of Nordic language history are confined to individual languages and often concentrate on purely linguistic data, the present work covers the history of all Nordic languages in its totality, embedded in a broad culture-historical context. The Nordic languages are described …

  • Semicommunication and accommodation: Observations from the linguistic situation in Scandinavia

    Open Access•Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•International Journal of Applied…•2002•Cited by: 5

The default in inter‐Scandinavian communication between Danes, Swedes and Norwegians is the use of the respective mother tongue together with the willingness to accept and understand the neighbouring standard languages. Einar Haugen in 1966 called this form of asymmetric communication ‘semicommunication’. This term has, however, been misleading because it suggests that the interlocutors will only understand roughly ‘half’ of what has been said, w…

  • Communication strategies in the area of the Hanseatic League: The approach by semi-communication

    Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•Multilingua•1997

This paper deals with various forms of bi- and multilingualism in Scandinavia during the era of the Hanseatic League from about 1200 to 1550. It is argued that one of the main ways to come into (unmediated) contact was semi-communication, i.e., a special way to communicate by means of one's own native language considering the genetically related neighbouring languages as mutually intelligible linguistic varieties or dialects. Special emphasis is …

    Open Access•Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1996

This paper first briefly outlines the general political, economic, cultural and linguistic situation in the era of the Hanseatic League. Then the dichotomy ‘language contact’ vs ‘dialect contact’ is discussed in detail. The main focus lies, however, on a thorough investigation of various forms of bilingualism and especially on the concept of semi-communication. It is shown that this concept (roughly, the way Scandinavians today communicate with e…

  • Remarks on the Formation of Cojunctions in Germanic Languages

    Open Access•Kurt Braunmuller•ARTICLE•Nordic Journal of Linguistics•1978

This paper focusses upon the semantics of cojunctions and their referential properties in texts. It is show that the function of conjunctions can be descrined in terms of deictic theory of didcourse reference. The main argument is that there is in principle neituer a functional nor an original historical difference berween pronominal/deictic expressions on the one hand, and conjunctions on the other. Some general aspects of the historical evoluti…
