  • A new reading of Piaget in childhood sociology

Open Access•Daniel Stoecklin, Marc J Ratcliff et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2026

Returning to Piaget’s original writings reveals that sociologists of childhood still largely ignore the social dimension in his theory of developmental stages. Superficial reading and distorted integration may have been an effect of the disciplinary competition that surrounded the emergence of the sociology of childhood. After reviewing the sociological misunderstandings and reproduced clichés about Piaget’s conception of development, we restore …

  • Piaget as scientific diplomat: Exchanges between the Geneva School and Soviet psychologists during the 1950s–60s

Open Access•Luciano Nicolás García, Ramiro Tau et al.•ARTICLE•History of the Human Sciences•2026•Cited by: 1•References: 28

It is known that Jean Piaget visited the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and other socialist countries during the second half of the 20th century. However, these trips are usually mentioned in historical works as one more episode referring to Piaget’s international circulations or as a marginal information in the general plan of discussing divergences, complementarities, or incompatibilities between Lev Vygotsky’s psychology and Piagetian gen…

  • An “Arcipilago” as an Intellectual Ecosystem: In Search of Jean Piaget’s Library Through a Visual History

    Open Access•Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•Human Arenas•2025

Divided into three parts, this article highlights the spatial and temporal boundaries of Jean Piaget’s library through a visual history of his office based on photographs taken since the late 1960s. First, we showed how Piaget’s library, as part of an intellectual ecosystem, sedimented along a spatial boundary into a horizontalized space, the “archipilago,” consisting of an archipelago of book stacks and files, and a vertical space, the wall-moun…

  • Alexander Luria and Jean Piaget: Partial Reconstruction of Their Cooperation

    Open Access•Marc J Ratcliff, R Van Der Veer•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of the…•2025•References: 27

In this paper the genesis of the cooperation between Alexander Luria and Jean Piaget is reconstructed on the basis of recently found correspondence and historical data. It is shown that their initial meeting at the famous Ninth International Congress of Psychology in New Haven, 1929, formed the beginning of a cordial and productive relationship which, however, was abruptly interrupted in the late 1930's. At the background of much of their coopera…

  • Jean Piaget and the autonomous disciples, Alina Szeminska and Bärbel Inhelder: From the “critical method” to the appropriation of research culture

    Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•History of Psychology•2024•Cited by: 1

The problems addressed in this article are the transition from the Piagetian clinical method to the so-called critical method, that is, the use of objects manipulated by both the experimenter and the child, and the study of the role of Piaget's female collaborators--in particular Alina Szeminska and Bärbel Inhelder--in the establishment of the critical method. Several authors suggested that Inhelder was behind certain Piagetian experimental devic…

  • Origins, Trends and Perspectives of Historical-Epistemological Research on Piaget

    Open Access•Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•Integrative Psychological and…•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 19

In this paper, several points of view are adopted to present the research directions of contemporary Piagetian historiography. This article first notes the immensity of the secondary literature (20’000 texts) related to Piaget’s work, between empirical and historical-epistemological works. In order to get a more precise idea, we carried out various analyses of the scope of influence of his work: on the 2000 keywords of the thesaurus of secondary …

  • Abraham Trembley's Strategy of Generosity and the Scope of Celebrity in the Mid-Eighteenth Century

    Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•Isis•2004•Cited by: 5•References: 9

Historians of science have long believed that Abraham Trembley's celebrity and impact were attributable chiefly to the incredible regenerative phenomena demonstrated by the polyp, which he discovered in 1744, and to the new experimental method he devised to investigate them. This essay shows that experimental method alone cannot account for Trembley's success and influence; nor are the marvels of the polyp sufficient to explain its scientific and…

  • Wonders, Logic, and Microscopy in the Eighteenth Century: A History of the Rotifer

    Open Access•Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•Science in Context•2000

The Argument Contrary to the dominant historiography of microscopy, which tends to maintain that there was no microscopical program in the Enlightenment, this paper argues that there was such a program and attempts to illustrate one aspect of its dynamic character. The experiments, observations, and interpretations on rotifers and their management by scholars of that period show that there did exist a precise axis of research that can be followed…

  • Le concept d'intensité dans la psychologie de Charles Bonnet/The concept of intensity in Charles Bonnet's psychology

    Marc J Ratcliff•ARTICLE•Revue d histoire des sciences•1997•Cited by: 2
