  • What can we learn (and not learn) from thought experiments in black hole thermodynamics

    Open Access•Rawad El Skaf, Patricia Palacios•ARTICLE•Synthese•2022•References: 50

Scientists investigating the thermal properties of black holes rely heavily on theoretical and non-empirical tools, such as mathematical derivations, analogue experiments and thought experiments. Although the use of mathematical derivations and analogue experiments in the context of black hole physics has recently received a great deal of attention among philosophers of science, the use of thought experiments (TEs) in that context has been almost…

  • On the Universality of Hawking Radiation

Open Access•Sean Gryb, Patricia Palacios et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2021•Cited by: 8•References: 77

A physically consistent semi-classical treatment of black holes requires universality arguments to deal with the ‘trans-Planckian’ problem where quantum spacetime effects appear to be amplified such that they undermine the entire semi-classical modelling framework. We evaluate three families of such arguments in comparison with Wilsonian renormalization group universality arguments found in the context of condensed matter physics. Our analysis is…

  • What science can do for democracy: A Complexity Science Approach

    Open Access•Tina Eliassi‐Rad, Tina Eliassi-Rad et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2020•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Political scientists have conventionally assumed that achieving democracy is a one-way ratchet. Only very recently has the question of “democratic backsliding” attracted any research attention. We argue that democratic instability is best understood with tools from complexity science. The explanatory power of complexity science arises from several features of complex systems. Their relevance in the context of democracy is discussed. Several polic…

  • Infinite idealizations in science: An introduction

    Open Access•Samuel C Fletcher, Patricia Palacios et al.•ARTICLE•Synthese•2019•Cited by: 5•References: 31

  • Phase Transitions: A Challenge for Intertheoretic Reduction

    Open Access•Patricia Palacios•ARTICLE•Philosophy of Science•2019•Cited by: 9•References: 26

I analyze the extent to which classical phase transitions, both first order and continuous, pose a challenge for intertheoretic reduction. My contention is that phase transitions are compatible with a notion of reduction that combines Nagelian reduction and what Thomas Nickles called Reduction 2 . I also argue that, even if the same approach to reduction applies to both types of phase transitions, there is a crucial difference in their physical t…

  • Stability of democracies: A complex systems perspective

Open Access•Karoline Wiesner, Alvin Birdi et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Physics•2018

The idea that democracy is under threat, after being largely dormant for at least 40 years, is looming increasingly large in public discourse. Complex systems theory offers a range of powerful new tools to analyse the stability of social institutions in general, and democracy in particular. What makes a democracy stable? And which processes potentially lead to instability of a democratic system? This paper offers a complex systems perspective on …

  • Market crashes as critical phenomena? Explanation, idealization, and universality in econophysics

    Open Access•Jennifer Jhun, Jennifer S Jhun et al.•ARTICLE•Synthese•2018•Cited by: 5•References: 67

  • Joint work experiences between researchers and native communities, the case of Southern Patagonia
