Leveraging Change: Perceived Relevance and Organisational Support for Agents of Change for Sustainable Land Management in Agriculture in Aotearoa New Zealand
This study examines the role of agents of change (AoCs) in promoting environmentally sustainable land management in Aotearoa New Zealand's (AoNZ's) agricultural system. Survey responses from 196 individuals across five organisational types highlighted significant sustainability challenges in nine agricultural sectors. Dairy was perceived as the least sustainable; mixed farming as the most sustainable, albeit still facing moderate environmental ch…
Can community‐based conservation improve social acceptance of invasive species management? Lessons from New Zealand
Invasive species management (ISM) is often met with social conflict, particularly around lethal control methods. A key source of conflict is mistrust in government and other authorities undertaking ISM. Community‐based conservation (CBC) therefore holds potential for implementing ISM with reduced social conflict. Community groups are playing an important role in New Zealand's (NZ's) Predator Free 2050 (PF2050) goal, which aims to eradicate three …
Kia aiō ngā ngaru, kia hora te marino: Smoothing the waters in natural resource management to mitigate risk and uncertainty
Aotearoa (New Zealand) is undertaking reforms in natural resource management, and there are promising signals that Indigenous perspectives will be included alongside science for decision-making. Any resource management system is underpinned by worldviews, from which values stem and then risk and uncertainty derive. Māori (the Indigenous peoples of New Zealand) and Eurocentric notions of risk and uncertainty are fundamentally different because kno…
Achieving societal collaboration and impact in Aotearoa-New Zealand through transdisciplinarity
Aotearoa-New Zealand (A-NZ) faces growing complex environmental challenges and a persistent knowledge-action gap that leaves many social and environmental problems unresolved. The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment, a major science funder, has called for transdisciplinary modes of research to address increasingly complex problems in an integrated and collaborative fashion. We explore what is needed for transdisciplinary research (TD…
Kia Manawaroa Kia Puawai: Enduring Māori livelihoods
Neoliberalism has failed us. Our waterways are contaminated, their mauri (life-force) has diminished; our economic growth is fast approaching environmental limits, almost 4000 of our indigenous plant and animal species are currently threatened with or at risk of extinction, and our biodiversity has declined significantly. Increasingly stringent regulations are being rolled out by policy makers to protect natural systems, but these are framed by E…
