  • Vagueness and common ground

    Open Access•Ricardo Mena•ARTICLE•Philosophical Studies•2026

This paper offers a criticism of Barker and MacFarlane’s approach to vagueness and communication. In their view, it is not problematic, as far as vagueness is concerned, to specify the content of a vague sentence: it is simply a function that updates the common ground. What is tricky, as far as vagueness is concerned, is to specify the common ground. In this paper, I will argue that their view is committed to attributing unreasonable propositiona…

  • Metalinguistic effects

    Open Access•Ricardo Mena•ARTICLE•Mind & Language•2023

We can communicate linguistic information by asserting sentences that are not explicitly about linguistic matters. Stalnaker offers a pragmatic account of this phenomenon. It is not clear that such an account is correct. In this article I offer an alternative account that does not rely on pragmatic mechanisms and which captures many of the insights in Stalnaker's theory of linguistic communication. The view is inspired by Barker's semantics of va…

  • Efectos metalingüisticos y metacontextuales

    Open Access•Ricardo Mena•ARTICLE•THEORIA An International Journal…•2022

    Empty Names and Negative Existentials

  • The Quietist’s Gambit

    Open Access•Ricardo Mena•ARTICLE•Critica•2018

In this paper I develop a semantic theory of vagueness that is immune to worries regarding the use of precise mathematical tools. I call this view semantic quietism. This view has the advantage of being clearly compatible with the phenomenon of vagueness. The cost is that it cannot capture every robust semantic fact

  • Dependencia ontológica y fundamentalidad

    Open Access•Ricardo Mena•ARTICLE•Ideas y Valores•2018•References: 14
