Effect of Social Interactions and Digital Appropriation in the Individual Labor Participation in a Developing Country
The article discusses how social interactions and digital appropriation of technology affect the decisions of people to work or not work (labor participation) in a spatial context. An individual's decision to participate in the labor force is influenced by their neighbors in a spatial sense; that is, spatial neighborhoods affect individual choices related to labor supply. The digital appropriation index was built using intentions and uses of the …
Social violence and the impacts on education in migrant households
This article discusses the relationship between migration and education in the context of social violence. Migration stimulates development and alleviates poverty by providing money for household human capital investments in the migrant’s home country; however, in the context of social violence, the positive effects of migration may be offset or disappear entirely. Using unique data from Santiago de Cali, with one of the highest homicide rates wo…
A methodological critique of Munshi's model on clientelism, public goods, and divided democracies
As social scientists, we find Soumyanetra Munshi's theoretical work on the dilemma between clientelism and public goods in divided democracies both fascinating and thought-provoking. However, this article addresses two core issues in her model. The dialogue is guided by a perspective in formal modeling that emphasizes the analytical relevance of conclusions that may appear absurd, as well as internal contradictions. We critique Munshi's model by …
Effect of home care activities on labor participation in a developing country
This article analyzes the differences in labor participation due to home care activities in Colombia. Indirect and direct care activities can be inside or outside the market sphere. For example, a domestic service worker provides indirect and, sometimes, direct care services. A high percentage of care activities are delegated to women because these tasks are supposedly proper for their gender and are a natural part of their daily lives. To unders…
Returns to human capital in a developing country
This article analyzes the recent returns to human capital in Colombia. Using a pseudo-panel approach, the results show a human capital return of 9.7% from 2016 to 2020. Comparisons with previous data show a reduction of approximately 5 p.p. in return on human capital. Our results show the importance of investing in Colombia’s human capital due to the positive externalities compared to other forms of investment in Colombia. Also, we find statistic…
Using a generalized ordered probit model, we offer statistical evidence in favor of the political economy thesis. This thesis states that government parties in power group-led precarious democracies, in which drug trafficking and clientelism are allies and seek to co-opt government at the local level, systematically undermine the quality of public policy. We choose the potable water sector in the Colombian Pacific because local democracies in thi…
This article analyzes the educational mismatch in the city of Cali, Colombia, using the evolution of diploma requirements reported in the classified advertisements published in El País, the city’s main newspaper, as basis. We built a time series differentiating between those classified ads requiring a diploma to get the job and those that do not. The tests show that the series has a unit root, so a decomposition analysis to estimate its permanent…
