Translation of the Mahābhārata and Cognitive Linguistics
This article analyses the battle descriptions in the Mahābhārata from the perspective of cognitive linguistics, focusing on how the epic’s oral character shapes its linguistic and narrative structure. Drawing on the author’s experience as a translator of Sanskrit into Polish, the study explores the relationship between word order and viewpoint construal, showing how syntactic strategies guide the listener’s imagination and evoke emotional respons…
Hinduism in Zambia – Main Concepts of the Religion in Cognitive Perspective
There are approximately 4400 Hindus in Zambia, with five Hindu temples in Lusaka and two in Kafue. The majority of Zambian Hindus are descendants of people who migrated from India in the 20th century or from the boarder Indian diasporas. However, during our research temple priests and leaders said that there were about 60 indigenous Africans and 30 white1 Europeans who embraced Hinduism in their pursuit of spiritual growth and the feeling of prot…

Report from the Battlefield: How to Translate Battle Descriptions in the Mahābhārata This article discusses the problem of scene construal in translation, based on a selected description of the battle scene in the Mahābhārata. It is an old Indian epic (c. 400 BCE–400 CE), the greatest epic of mankind (c. 100,000 stanzas), composed in Sanskrit, most likely orally, and certainly distributed in this way. Its main theme is the war between related fam…
Repro_PL-Polish Mother and Child Cohort—Exposure, Health Status, and Neurobehavioral Assessments in Adolescents—Design and Cohort Update
Early life is a crucial window of opportunity to improve health across the life course. The prospective cohort study design is the most adequate to evaluate the longitudinal effects of exposure, the notification of changes in the exposure level and evaluation of the simultaneous impact of various exposures, as well as the assessment of several health effects and trajectories throughout childhood and adolescence. This paper provides an overview of…
Synthetic Pyrethroids Exposure and Embryological Outcomes
Pyrethroids exposure has been associated with adverse reproductive outcome. However, there is no study that explores the effect of environmental exposure and embryological outcomes. This question was addressed in a prospective cohort of couples undergoing fertility treatment. The study aims to assess the association between urinary metabolites of synthetic pyrethroids and embryological outcomes (MII oocyte count, top quality embryo, fertilization…
Filozofia, rytuał i performatywność w starożytnej myśli indyjskiej na przykładzie upaniszady Ćhandogia 6.2.4
Philosophy, ritual and performativity in ancient Indian thought on the example of the Chandogia Upanishad 6.2.4 The paper discusses cosmogony presented by Uddālaka Āruṇi attested in the Chāndogya Upaniṣad (6.1-6), according to which world forms arise by giving them a name. I argue that the experience that motivates the thinking of Uddālaka is ritual, the essence of which is to give people and objects a name, thanks to which their status dramatica…
Urinary Bisphenol A Concentrations and Parameters of Ovarian Reserve among Women from a Fertility Clinic
Our results suggest that BPA exposure may affect women ovarian reserve parameters and reduce ovarian reserve. As this is one of the first studies of its kind, the findings need confirmation in a further investigation
Correlates of Poor Self-Assessed Health Status among Socially Disadvantaged Populations in Poland
Self-assessment of health is recommended as valuable source of information about subjective health status. The present study was performed to evaluate the correlates of self-rated health status among beneficiaries of social care in Poland. This assessment could be crucial for the implementation of targeted preventive measures among this valuable population. The study population consisted of 1710 beneficiaries of social care from the Piotrkowski D…
The wheel of time
The aim of the paper is to show how conceptual metonymy, metaphor and blending, as discussed in cognitive linguistics, can be used in the investigation on the beginning of abstraction in philosophical thinking. The analysis is based on selected stanzas from the Ṛgveda (ca. 13th BC), the Atharvaveda (ca. 10-9th BC) and the Mahābhārata (ca. 4th BC - 4th AD) composed in Sanskrit. I discuss how the notion of riding in a chariot, used in the earliest …

Exposure to ambient air pollution-does it affect semen quality and the level of reproductive hormones
The present study provides suggestive evidence of an association between ambient air pollution and sperm quality. Further research is needed to explore this association in more detail. Individual precise exposure assessment would be needed for more detailed risk characterization
Occupational, life stress and family functioning
The study indicates that occupational stress can affect male semen quality; however, due to limited data on this issue, the obtained results should be confirmed in longitudinal studies
The Rigveda, the cognitive linguistics and the oral poetry
My aim is to show how the principal notions of cognitive linguistics, namely metaphor and metonymy are helpful in the analysis of the ancient Indian poetical text, the Rigveda. Their use enables us to reconstruct aspects of thinking of the Rigvedic poets and to explain some obscure metaphors. The basic way of conceptualization of desire in the Rigveda is presented
