  • Sustaining the teaching profession

Open Access•Amanda Nuttall, Ed Podesta et al.•ARTICLE•British Educational Research…•2025•References: 64

This paper examines the implications of England's ‘golden thread’ policy framework for teacher education, which describes a state‐mandated, linear model of professional learning from initial teacher training and education through to continuing professional development. Our collaborative retrospective analysis of three empirical studies within a university‐led teacher education partnership critically examines the experiences of student teachers, e…

  • Effects of acculturation stress and identity gaps on Mexican-heritage adolescent depressive symptoms and substance use behavior

    Youngju Shin, Megan Stephenson•ARTICLE•Communication Monographs•2024•References: 29

Children of immigrant families are placed at high risk of acculturation stress due to their role serving as a cultural broker for their family members. Communication theory of identity (CTI) explains that the discrepancies between one's personal, enacted, relational, and communal layers of identity lead to negative health outcomes. Guided by CTI, the present study investigated indirect effects of acculturation stress on Mexican-heritage adolescen…

  • Inner monologues of a newbie CCPer

Reslie Cortés, Ana Isabel Terminel Iberri et al.•ARTICLE•Text and Performance Quarterly•2023•References: 1

Our identities as critical educators are at odds with the hierarchy performatively enforcing the banking model of education. We understand the classroom as a political site where we labor to envision and perform anti-oppression communication. This pedagogical labor reflexively and necessarily unravels students at the edge of their/our intersectional privileges and disadvantages. In this piece, we use performance to reflexively interrogate and dev…

  • Against the grain

    Lore/tta Lemaster, Meggie Mapes et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Education•2022

This agenda-setting theory essay offers a collaborative response to Sprague, J. (1992). Expanding the research agenda for instructional communication: Raising some unasked questions. Communication Education, 41(1), 1–25. https://doi.org/10.1080/03634529209378867 early theorizing on critical approaches to communication pedagogy, developing it to account not only for critical developments since but also to the political precarity increasingly organ…

  • Perceived discrimination and collective fear in Mexican-heritage adolescents

Youngju Shin, Sarah Amira De La Garza et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of International and…•2022•References: 17

The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between perceived discrimination and collective fears in Mexican-heritage adolescents of immigrant families living in the U.S (N = 210) by revalidating a new scale of collective fear (e.g., specific fear in person, specific fear in family, and widespread fear). Confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis was run to test the concurrent validity. The results revealed that perceived discrim…

  • Trans (gender) trouble

Lore/tta Lemaster, Benny Lemaster et al.•ARTICLE•Communication and Critical/Cultural…•2021•Cited by: 4

In this essay, we tease out and implicate what we term the queer (cissexist) theoretical imagination suggesting an incommensurability of sorts between that of queer theory and that of trans subjectivity. The incommensurability renders a reductive framing of transness, in cissexist terms, that privilege transgression (often of a superficial sort) of gender over basic trans, transgender, and transsexual survival and wellness. In the end, we encoura…

  • A Meta-Theoretical Systematic Review of the Culture-Centered Approach to Health Communication

    Open Access•Shaunak Sastry, Megan Stephenson et al.•ARTICLE•Communication Theory•2019•Cited by: 12•References: 10

While the influence of the culture-centered approach (CCA; Dutta, 2008 ) on health communication scholarship is undeniable, there has been no evaluation of its application in the field. Guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines for systematic reviews (Moher, Liberati, Tetzlaff & Altman, 2009), we analyzed a corpus of empirical, peer-reviewed literature (n = 47) that used the CCA. Our findings demo…
