Non‐formal educators' roles in environmental education
Environmental and non‐formal education are fundamental in the context of interconnected global crises, particularly climate change and biodiversity loss. Non‐formal spaces such as national parks, botanical gardens, zoos and aquariums offer unique environments that promote values, knowledge and attitudes to foster environmental consciousness. However, research on the perspectives and roles of non‐formal educators in these spaces remains limited. T…
Towards critical global functional scientific literacies
Amid intensifying global crises—including environmental degradation, socio-ecological injustices, and widespread public mistrust in science—science education must be re-envisioned through more critical and global but also local inclusive lenses. This response article critically engages with the recent contribution by Lederman et al. (2025), who introduce the concept of global functional scientific literacy. While their intervention is timely, we …
Navigating collaborative and participatory research during and after the Covid-19 pandemic
Collaborative and Participatory Research (CPR) presents different challenges for doctoral students, compared to other researchers. Even under ‘normal’ circumstances, engaging with CPR poses intricate practical and ethical challenges. For instance, understanding CPR or forming alliances to co-create knowledge can be particularly challenging. Moreover, the increasing popularity of CPR within universities is not always accompanied by sufficient trai…
Design and Validation of a Classroom Observation Instrument to Evaluate the Quality of Mathematical Activity from a Gender Perspective
This study aimed to design and validate an instrument as a guideline for classroom observation and analysis of teaching–learning process in mathematics. The instrument considers 3 dimensions and 16 subdimensions with a gender perspective. A content validity process by eight expert judges is presented, built from a dialectical work between theory and empirical evidence from more than 100 classes observed and recorded on video from 19 educational c…
Science outside the classroom
This article examines an outdoor science activity based on Interdisciplinary Teaching and Learning of Science (ITLS) undertaken with a collaborative research methodology as a Research-Practice Partnership (RPP). The activity was implemented in a national reserve in Chile as part of continuing professional development and co-designed by in-service science teachers and researchers. The study had two research questions: 1) How do in-service teachers…
Severe acute respiratory infections (Sari) from influenza in adult patients in Chile
Influenza-associated SARI affected mainly elderly patients with underlying conditions. Most patients evolved to respiratory failure and more than one-quarter required critical care beds. Clinical presentation was variable. Death was associated with host characteristics and disease-associated conditions, and vaccine was protective. Virus type did not influence outcome
