Young people's occupational aspirations beyond the aspiration discourse
Young people's aspirations have been the focus of many educational, sociological and psychological studies. This paper argues, firstly, that the concept of aspirations holds greater generative potential than suggested by the policy‐oriented ‘aspiration discourse’. Power structures and perceptions of AI fairness in high-stakes language testing
Educational assessment is currently undergoing extensive transformation, with the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), raising critical questions about fairness and validity. This article applies Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to provide a micro-level analysis of how individual attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived control shape test-takers’ interactions with AI-based assessments, using the Pearson Test of English (PTE Aca…
‘It opened a new teaching space for me’
In-service teachers' professional development (PD) courses on digital education tend to be based on a restrictive idea of ‘knowledge transfer’ presupposing an application of course content into practice through a top-down and linear approach. In this paper, we adopt a broader conceptual perspective to examine the learning outcomes of an online/hybrid PD course developed through a design-based research project between 2020 and 2023 and attended by…
Machine learning and human learning
The paper adopts an inter-theoretical socio-cultural and -material perspective on the relationship between human + machine learning to propose a new way to investigate the human + machine assistive assemblages emerging in professional work (e.g. medicine, architecture, design and engineering). Its starting point is Hutchins’s (1995a) concept of ‘distributed cognition’ and his argument that his concept of ‘cultural ecosystems’ constitutes a unit o…
Motivation in internship
In search of time
This article investigates teachers' lived experiences of an online professional development (OPD) course in Denmark – that is, Teknosofikum – through a hermeneutic phenomenological perspective, and it relies on the interpretive analysis of 15 semi‐structured interviews. The article's contribution focuses on the theme of ‘time’ and highlights it as a multifaceted construct that plays a relevant role in learning. By relying on the ideas of temporal…
