The Passion of the Space Jockey
The “biomechanoids” of the Swiss painter H. R. Giger (1940–2014) depict the sadomasochistic bondage of humans and machines. Although Giger’s art has commonly been interpreted in psychoanalytic terms as representing some past trauma connected with origins and birth, I argue that it also encodes a distinctly gnostic warning about the trajectory of consciousness in relation to technology, a “fall of spirit into matter” that may lie ahead of our spec…
Targeting Youth to Prevent Later Substance Use Disorder

To date, more distal primary prevention strategies that have an evidence base are underutilized. Yet, the impact of early environments on later substance use di…
Instrument Development, Study Design Implementation, and Survey Conduct for the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project
The National Opinion Research Center, led by a team of investigators at the University of Chicago, conducted more than 3,000 in-person interviews with a nationally representative sample of adults aged 57-85 years. Data collection included in-person questionnaire items, an extensive array of biomeasures, and a postinterview self-administered questionnaire. The National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP) interview included the collectio…

But Magritte’s uncanny use of perspective, and his depi…
