  • Using research in practice

    Open Access•Madeleine Stevens, Kristin Liabo et al.•ARTICLE•Child & Family Social Work•2005•Cited by: 5•References: 5

In recent years a variety of initiatives have been created with the aim of increasing the use of research in social care practice. This article reports findings from a one-year pilot research information service provided by the What Works for Children project. Taking note of the evidence from the research utilization literature, the service was set up to support social care practitioners in using research findings in their service-planning. An im…

  • Some environmental consequences of groundsheets on campsite vegetation

    C I Collingwood, S Frost•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1988

Opaque groundsheets create conditions on camp and caravan site awards similar to those generated by agricultural polyethylene mulches. On monoculture field plots, translucent polyethylene sheeting killed much less vegetation than groundsheets. After three weeks under groundsheets at least twice as much live biomass of Poa trivialis survived compared with three other grasses and Trifolium repens. The former would therefore be beneficial to include…

  • Effect of particulate Abate insecticide on invertebrate stream drift communities in Newfoundland

    S Frost, L B Sinniah•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1982

A particulate formulation of Abate was used to control blackfly (Diptera: Simuliidae) larvae in Newfoundland. The effects of this compound on stream invertebrates during routine field use was observed by using drift fauna collected in relation to five insecticide treatments using dosage ranging from 0.059–0.091 ppm Abate applied for 18–23 minutes in four different streams. Invertebrate populations varied from stream to stream and the effects of t…

  • The effect of abate on the growth of Vibrio natriegens and Chlorella vulgaris

    N K Low‐Goh, Pam Edwards et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1981

The effect of Abate on the growth of a species of bacteria, Vibrio natriegens, and a species of algae, Chlorella vulgaris, was studied. The growth of V. natriegens was measured by both the changes in the optical density and the viable counts of the bacterial suspension. Changes in the optical density of the alga measured by a colorimeter and by the direct counting the number of cells with a haemocytometer were taken as an index of growth. Abate w…

  • Fish deaths at Elton reservoir

    S Frost, R I Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1978

The course of a proposed biological survey of Elton Reservoir was changed by the appearance of dead and decaying fish floating or washed onto the beaches. This was both unpleasant for sailors and disastrous to anglers. The case study illustrates the importance of maintaining a biological balance, as indicated by healthy fish stocks, whilst providing for industrial and amenity needs of those using the canals supplied by water from the reservoir. T…

  • A survey on the impact of motorways on agriculture

S Frost, Mike Thomas et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•1976

This paper looks into the ways in which farmers and farms are affected by motorways running through or near to their land. The investigation was based on an extensive questionnaire covering many aspects of farming. The more important of these questions are described and discussed in the text. Two farming communities were investigated; one near a newly opened motorway, the other, near a motorway which had been open several years. The two groups ar…
