Enhancing traditional surveys with village view imagery and multimodal large language models
Quantifying visual hollowing in rural settlements from large-scale rural street-view imagery
Beyond surveys
High-precision and wide coverage data on rural household wealth are essential for bridging national-level rural revitalization policies with micro-level rural entities, enabling the precise allocation of public resources. However, the vast number and dispersed distribution of rural communities in China make wealth data difficult to collect and scarce in availability. To address this challenge, this study proposes an integrated technical framework…
Unveiling the environmental accommodation with cultural identity in vernacular houses through knowledge-fused explainable AI
Vernacular houses are a physical representation of humans adapting their dwellings to new natural and cultural environments using traditional architectural techniques. The variation among vernacular houses involves long-term human endeavors to balance environmental accommodation and cultural identity. Due to the lack of large-scale data and quantitative measuring techniques for housing features, evaluating holistic and fine-grained similarity amo…
Is there a link between city characteristics and shared e-bike utilisation? Evidence from China
Visualising transformation in rural housing landscapes
Rural housing landscapes in China are undergoing significant transformation, with a growing trend towards de-localization that reflects broader cultural and social shifts. Unlike previous studies emphasising top-down influences, this research highlights how rural residents engage with digital platforms, adopt architectural styles from urban experiences, and redefine their built environments according to evolving aspirations. Using image-to-data a…
Sky-Scanning for Energy
The pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals has highlighted rural electricity consumption patterns, necessitating innovative analytical approaches. This paper introduces a novel method for predicting rural electricity consumption by leveraging deep convolutional features extracted from satellite imagery. The study employs a pretrained remote sensing interpretation model for feature extraction, streamlining the training process and enhancing …
Explainable dimensionality reduction (XDR) to unbox AI ‘black box’ models
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become frequently used in data and knowledge production in diverse domain studies. Scholars began to reflect on the plausibility of AI models that learn unexplained tacit knowledge, spawning the emerging research field, eXplainable AI (XAI). However, superior XAI approaches have yet to emerge that can explain the tacit knowledge acquired by AI models into human-understandable explicit knowledge. This paper propose…
Return migration and in-situ urbanization of 79 migrant sending counties in China
The impact of Covid-19 on bike-sharing travel pattern and flow structure
The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically influenced urban mobility patterns. This paper explores the impact of the pandemic on the travel patterns and flow structure of bike-sharing, in Wuhan, China. We find that during the pandemic, bike-sharing became a major mode of transport and helped for the travel to hospitals. In post-pandemic Wuhan, more cycling neighbourhoods emerged in suburban areas, and the percentage of bike-sharing ridership in dense…
Mobility restrictions and their implications on the rental housing market during the Covid-19 pandemic in China's large cities
Developing China’s workforce skill taxonomy reveals extent of labor market polarization
China, the world’s second largest economy, is transitioning into an advanced, knowledge-based economy after four decades of rapid economic development. However, China still lacks a detailed understanding of the skills that underly the Chinese labor force, and the development and spatial distribution of these skills. Similar data has proven essential in other contexts; for example, the US standardized skill taxonomy, Occupational Information Netwo…
Detecting industry clusters from the bottom up based on co-location patterns mining
Industry cluster development is important to stimulate regional economy. Conventional spatial methods for detecting industry clusters use a pairwise manner to infer the co-location relationships of multiple industrial types or instances, which increases the difficulty of interpreting the results. This study proposes to use co-location patterns (CPs) mining method to directly capture the co-location of multiple industrial types from the bottom up …
