  • Catholic and Tamil Divine Mothers

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•International Journal of Asian…•2023

The cult of the Virgin Mary in southern India and especially in Tamil Nadu is very popular, and she certainly incarnates the emblematic figure of contemporary Indian Catholicism. After the arrival of the Portuguese in India, the task of evangelization was in the hands of the missionary orders who worked under Portuguese rule. In the seventeenth century, the centre of interest in Christian missions in India moved southwards to the Tamil country. I…

  • Gardens and public parks in Cuernavaca

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Landscape History•2017

Cuernavaca is the capital city of the state of Morelos, a region which was famous since prehispanic times for its exuberant nature and precious flowers. Here, Moctezuma ii laid out the famous prehispanic garden of Huaxtepec. Unfortunately very little is left of this beautiful Aztec garden. During the eighteenth century, Manuel de la Borda, a famous New Spain aristocrat, built his country-house and garden in Cuernavaca. The Borda Garden is regarde…

  • El grutesco en el arte Novohispano

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Colonial Latin American Review•2017•References: 2

  • The Worship of Mary in Mexico

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2012

This article will discuss how sacred tree was regarded as a manifestation of Goddess in pre-Hispanic Mexico and how Mary's association with trees in Christian religion enabled indigenous people to integrate this new goddess into their world vision. It will also explore why Christian crosses worshipped during feast of Holy Cross in Mexico are associated to Virgin Mary and why in some villages Mary is referred to as the cross

  • Variantes iconográficas de una Virgen armada

    Open Access•Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Revista de Humanidades•2011

In the first Christian works of art, Mary is shown enthroned holding the child Jesus on her lap. However, there are a number of Marys representations in Christian art that associate her with evil and the devil. This work will discuss the development of Marys image as an armed Virgin from its origins in Italy -under the advocation of Out Lady of Help- until its diffusion in Spain. At the same time, it will point out the important role that this im…

  • Christianity and Tamil Culture

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2011

Costanzo Giuseppe Beschi (1680–1747) was an Italian Jesuit sent to the Madurai Mission in 1711. Father Beschi was a highly educated man who commanded several languages, including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Portuguese prior to his move to India. Once at the mission he learned Tamil, Sanskrit, Telugu, and Urdu and wrote extensively in Tamil on both religious and profane subjects. Beschi had a deep veneration for the Virgin Mary. He, like many other …

  • The Indo-Mediterranean Caduceus and the Worship of the Tree, the Serpent, and the Mother Goddess in the South of India

Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Comparative Studies of South Asia…•2010

While the cult of trees is widespread in India, it is only in the south of India and especially in Tamil Nadu that the visitor frequently sees the pipal tree, symbolically considered male, planted together with a neem tree so that the two will grow together, their trunks and branches intertwined as one. At the bottom of these trees are usually placed several reliefs of intertwined serpents, an image very similar to that of Hermes/Mercury's caduce…

  • Huaxtepec

    Patrizia Granziera•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2005•References: 3

The symbolic meaning of Huaxtepec, a very famous Aztec garden, is explained, showing how it could have reflected some concepts of the pre-Columbian world view. Aztec and Maya societies were essentially agricultural. Thus, their main preoccupation was fertility, which they tried to maintain through the cult of gods associated with water and earth. Human life was impossible without earth, plants and animals. In a world where the sacred was conceive…
