Family physicians’ perspectives on collaboration challenges between primary care and specialist care during the Covid-19 pandemic in Canada
Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canada had longer wait-times for specialist appointments compared to other Commonwealth countries. During the pandemic, many specialist services were postponed or suspended, impacting access. The purpose of this study was to explore family physicians’ perspectives on specialist care availability during the pandemic and implications for family physician workload and patient management. These experiences can inform f…
“It was horrible for that community, but not for the way we had imagined”
The COVID-19 response required family physicians (FPs) to adapt their practice to minimise transmission risks. Policy guidance to facilitate enacting public health measures has been generic and difficult to apply, particularly for FPs working with communities that experience marginalisation. Our objective was to explore the experiences of FPs serving communities experiencing marginalisation during COVID-19, and the impact the pandemic and pandemi…
Virtual Healthcare in Rural and Remote Settings
The differing trends assessed in the findings illustrate the complications faced in providing virtual healthcare, which resonates with the experiences and views of rural physicians. The findings of this study may guide the development of tailored technologies that adjust for the complexity of administering virtual healthcare in rural communities
Evaluation plan of the 6for6 research skills program for rural and remote physicians
Overwhelming issues and barriers often prevent rural and remote physicians (RRPs) from pursuing the many socially accountable research questions they encounter on a daily basis. Although research training programs can empower RRPs to rise to these challenges, there is a lack of evidence on how they should be developed and refined. At Memorial University, a faculty development program (FDP) called 6for6 has been helping RRPs surmount their researc…
Sociodemographics and their impacts on risk factor awareness and beliefs about cancer and screening
Among adults in NL, there was poor awareness that low-fiber diets, alcohol, and age are risk factors for cancer. Lower income and education, rural residence, and not having a health care provider were associated with lower risk factor awareness. We also found a few associations between sociodemographic factors and beliefs about cancer treatment and outcomes or screening. We stress that while addressing awareness is necessary, so too is improving …
Expanding access to HIV testing through Canadian community pharmacies
Retrospectively registered with clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03210701) on July 6, 2017
Challenges with access to healthcare from the perspective of patients living with HIV
Accessing healthcare can be difficult but the barriers multiply for people living with HIV (PLHIV). To improve access and the health of PLHIV, we must consider their perspectives and use them to inform standard practice. A better understanding of the current literature related to healthcare access from the perspective of PLHIV, can help to identify evidence gaps and highlight research priorities and opportunities. To identify relevant peer-review…
Prevalence of Dyslipidemia in Newfoundland Adults
Introduction Dyslipidemia is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) has a higher level of CVD mortality than any other province in Canada. This high level may be partially explained by the lipid profiles of people in this province. To our knowledge, there is no study in NL or Canada to use electronic medical records (EMR) to assess the prevalence of dyslipidemia. Objectives First, to assess the prev…
