Public beliefs about the consequences of living with obesity in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland
Beliefs about the consequences of maintaining a healthy body weight are associated with individuals' weight, self-rated health, diet and perceived ease of adoption of dietary and exercise-related improvements. Beliefs about the health risks of obesity and perceived greater costs associated with maintaining a healthy weight appear to have strengthened over time. Present findings are pertinent to researchers and policy makers involved in the design…
OP56 Differential Effects of Smoking Cessation During Pregnancy on Birth Weight in a Cohort of Disadvantaged Women
Background Smoking during pregnancy is recognized as the most important preventable risk factor. Maternal smoking accounts for 20–30% of low birth weight infants (<2,500g), the most common adverse outcome in pregnancy. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of maternal smoking habits: stopping smoking in the first and second trimesters, continuing to smoke, number of cigarettes smoked and socio-demographic factors on infant birth …
PS54 Biomarkers Associated With Mortality In A Community Based Population With Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Background The STOP HF cohort is an ongoing longitudinal study of 1,040 individuals with cardiovascular risk factors and no known ventricular dysfunction at baseline. The study is located in South Dublin and the Southeast of Ireland. This is an analysis of the deaths reported at the interim analysis conducted in January 2012 (mean follow-up, 4 years, range 3.5–7.0 years). Methods Univariable analyses compared the profiles of survivors to those de…
Effectiveness of training in motivational interviewing in influencing smoking cessation in pregnant and postpartum women in lower socio-economic groups
Objective To determine whether an integrated approach, involving staff training in in brief intervention using Motivational Interviewing techniques in a standardised way, was sufficient to affect change in smoking status or intensity in low-income pregnant and postpartum women. Setting A large city centre Dublin maternity hospital Participants 1000 women who were smokers at time of pregnancy Design The study used a historical cohort design. 500 c…
Prospective sex-specific trans-generational association between cardiovascular risk factors of maternal and paternal grandparents and their grandchildren's birth weights in the Lifeways Cross Generati…
Purpose The association between infants' birth-weight (BW) and cardiovascular (CVD) morbidity or mortality of their grandparents has been reported by only three studies, but has not been investigated with antenatally measured CVD risk clinical parameters. Such antenatal clinical parameters studies are rare even with parents' data. We prospectively examined the relationship between measured CVD risk profile of grandparents and their grandchild's (…
