  • Covid-19 vaccination uptake and risk of severe Covid-19 disease among those in, and released from, prison care in Scotland

Open Access•Maxim Wilkinson, Alan Yeung et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of Drug…•2026

Our findings highlight the important role of prisons in facilitating rapid high coverage of vaccination, involving accelerated schedules where appropriate, to help mitigate the raised risk of severe disease outcomes among both those incarcerated and released into the community

  • Widening of inequalities in Covid-19 years of life lost from 2020 to 2021

    Open Access•Grant M A Wyper, Eilidh Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2022•References: 11

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have highlighted the large extent of inequality in adverse COVID-19 health outcomes. Our aim was to monitor changes in overall, and inequalities in, COVID-19 years of life lost to premature mortality (YLL) in Scotland from 2020 and 2021. METHODS: Cause-specific COVID-19 mortality counts were derived at age group and area deprivation level using Scottish death registrations for 2020 and 2021. YLL was estimated by multi…

  • Inequalities in population health loss by multiple deprivation

    Open Access•Grant M A Wyper, Eilidh Fletcher et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal for Equity…•2021

The substantial population health impact of COVID-19 in Scotland was not shared equally across areas experiencing different levels of deprivation. The extent of inequality due to COVID-19 was similar to averting all annual DALYs due to diabetes. In the wider context of population health loss, overall ill-health and mortality due to COVID-19 was, at most, a fifth of the annual population health loss due to inequalities in multiple deprivation. Imp…

  • Informing the ‘early years’ agenda in Scotland

Open Access•Omotomilola Ajetunmobi, Bruce Whyte et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2014•Cited by: 1•References: 26

BACKGROUND: Providing infants with the 'best possible start in life' is a priority for the Scottish Government. This is reflected in policy and health promotion strategies to increase breast feeding, which gives the best source of nutrients for healthy infant growth and development. However, the rate of breast feeding in Scotland remains one of the lowest in Europe. Information is needed to provide a better understanding of infant feeding and its…

  • P2-101 Prisoner mortality in Scotland 1996–2007

Lesley Graham, Colin Fischbacher et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2011

Introduction Mortality is substantially increased among those who have been imprisoned but there is little information about the extent to which excess mortality might be explained by deprivation. All cause mortality among Scottish prisoners has not previously been described. Methods Standard record linkage methods were used to link Scottish Prison Service and mortality data for individuals imprisoned in Scotland for the first time between 1 Janu…

  • Is the Scottish population living dangerously? Prevalence of multiple risk factors

Open Access•Richard Lawder, Oliver Harding et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2010

The prevalence of multiple behavioural risk factors was high and the prevalence of absence of all risk factors very low. These behavioural patterns were strongly associated with poorer socioeconomic circumstances. Policy to address factors needs to be joined up and better consider underlying socioeconomic circumstances

  • Reduction in young male suicide in Scotland

Open Access•Cameron Stark, Diane Stockton et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2008

There has been a reduction in suicide rates in men aged 15 - 29 years, and this is associated with a significant reduction in deaths by hanging in this age group. It is not clear whether this is related to a change in method preference, or an overall reduction in suicidal behaviour, and review of self-harm data will be required to investigate this further

  • Risk of breast cancer after miscarriage or induced abortion

David H Brewster, Diane Stockton et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2005•References: 22

Study objective: To assess the risk of breast cancer in patients with a previous history of miscarriage or induced abortion. Design: Case-control study relating “exposure” to outcome by linkage of national hospital discharge and maternity records, the national cancer registry, and death records. Setting: Scotland. Participants: Miscarriage analysis—2828 women with breast cancer and 9781 matched controls; induced abortion analysis—2833 women with …

  • Geographical clustering of acute adult leukaemia in the East Anglian region of the United Kingdom

    Padmanabhan Badrinath, N E Day et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 1

An ecological analysis by Alexander et al 1 observed a small but significant excess of leukaemia excluding chronic lymphoid leukaemia in estuarine wards (relative risk=1.12, 95%CI 1.01, 1.25). This analysis was confined to cases diagnosed during 1984-1986. Using regional leukaemia incidence data for 1981-1994, we performed a clustering study based on postcode districts 2 of address at diagnosis to test this hypothesis further. We did not have pop…
