Cancer mortality and sectors of employment
The results showed an increased risk of cancer death in some traditional industrial sectors compared to the reference category of insurance activities such as construction and wood and leather products and limited evidence in sectors like cleaning, accommodation and food services and hairdressing. The adopted method proved to be effective in monitoring occupational risks and activating proper prevention initiatives and further insights
The effect of diabetes on Covid-19 incidence and mortality
The objective of this study was to compare the effect of diabetes and pathologies potentially related to diabetes on the risk of infection and death from COVID-19 among people from Highly-Developed-Country (HDC), including Italians, and immigrants from the High-Migratory-Pressure-Countries (HMPC). Among the population with diabetes, whose prevalence is known to be higher among immigrants, we compared the effect of body mass index among HDC and HM…
Activities Carried Out during the First Covid-19 Lockdown by Italian Citizens
The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has altered how citizens engage in activities. This study describes the new activities citizens engaged in during the first lockdown, factors that helped them cope with the confinement, the supports they used the most, and which supports they would have liked to receive. This cross-sectional study consists of an online survey made of 49 questions that was completed by the citizens of the province of Reggio Emilia (Italy) f…
Barriers to Accessing Primary Care and Appropriateness of Healthcare Among Immigrants in Italy
INTRODUCTION: The health status and health care needs of immigrant populations must be assessed. The aim of this study was to evaluate barriers to accessing primary care and the appropriateness of health care among resident immigrants in Italy, using indicators regarding maternal health, avoidable hospitalization, and emergency care. METHODS: Cross-sectional study using some indicators of the National Monitoring System of Health Status and Health…
Poor Sleep during the First Peak of the Sars-CoV-2 Pandemic
The restrictions enacted during lockdown to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) have led to changes in people's lifestyle habits. In Italy, these restrictions have dramatically changed the way people work and spend their leisure time, also with repercussions on diet and physical activity. An anonymous survey was disseminated via websites and social media to a convenience sample of the Italian population during and immediately a…
General and Covid-19-Related Mortality by Pre-Existing Chronic Conditions and Care Setting during 2020 in Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy
In 2020, the number of deaths increased in Italy, mainly because of the COVID-19 pandemic; mortality was among the highest in Europe, with a clear heterogeneity among regions and socio-demographic strata. The present work aims to describe trends in mortality and to quantify excess mortality variability over time and in relation to demographics, pre-existent chronic conditions and care setting of the Emilia-Romagna region (Northern Italy). This is…
Physical distancing, face masks, and eye protection to prevent person-to-person transmission of Sars-CoV-2 and Covid-19
Association between Urinary Levels of Aflatoxin and Consumption of Food Linked to Maize or Cow Milk or Dairy Products
The aim of this analysis was to assess the association between consumption of maize and dairy products and urine and serum levels of aflatoxin FM1 (AFM1) in a sample of 59 males occupationally exposed (29) and non-exposed (30) to aflatoxins. Two urine samples were collected for each person; each sample was accompanied by a questionnaire on food consumption in the preceding 96 h. Given the similar levels of contamination found in exposed and non-e…
Geographic Inequalities in Breast Cancer in Italy
We calculated time trends of standardised mortality rates and risk factors for breast cancer (BC) from 1990 to 2016 for all women resident in Italy. The age-standardised mortality rate in Italy decreased from 4.2 in 1990 to 3.2 (×100,000) in 2016. While participation in organised screening programmes and age-standardised fertility rates decreased in Italy, screening invitation coverage and mammography uptake, the prevalence of women who breastfed…
Development and first application of an audit system for screening programs based on the PRECEDE-PROCEED model
The software application helps standardize criteria for planning interventions to improve screening programs and facilitates the implementation of the audit cycle
Towards a European Framework to Monitor Infectious Diseases among Migrant Populations
There are limitations in our capacity to interpret point estimates and trends of infectious diseases occurring among diverse migrant populations living in the European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA). The aim of this study was to design a data collection framework that could capture information on factors associated with increased risk to infectious diseases in migrant populations in the EU/EEA. The authors defined factors associated with i…
Differences in diabetes prevalence and inequalities in disease management and glycaemic control by immigrant status
Our findings highlight the need for gender-oriented actions for prevention and early diagnosis of the diabetes to contrast the higher risk in Northern Africans and Southern Asians. Further studies are required to determine whether the protocols in use are adequate for different immigrant groups
Epidemiology and costs of cervical cancer screening and cervical dysplasia in Italy
Although some cervical abnormalities might have been underestimated, the total annual cost of cervical cancer prevention in Italy is approximately 181.5 million euro, of which 87% is attributable to screening
Can colorectal cancer mass-screening organization be evidence-based? Lessons from failures
The feasibility study highlighted several limits of the model. Most of the barriers that emerged were consequences of organisational choices not supported by evidence. The principal limit was a lack of accountability by the participating centres
Dying of cancer in Italy
Objective: To describe the effect of terminal cancer on the patient’s family, finances and daily life. Methods: A cluster sample of 2000 adults (⩾18 years old) who had died from cancer, and who were representative of Italy, was studied. 1900 caregivers were identified and 68% responded to a post-bereavement survey. Caregivers included the patient’s child (46%), his/her spouse (31%), other relatives or friends (20%) or a health professional (3%). …
Defining a common set of indicators to monitor road accidents in the European Union
after overcoming the limitations that emerged (absence of a common definition of death by road accident and injury severity, underestimation of injuries, differences in information quality) this core set of indicators will allow Member States to carry out effective internal/external comparisons over time
Understanding non-compliance to colorectal cancer screening
To increase compliance, screening programmes must involve test providers who are geographically close to the target population
