Understanding linguistic accommodation in science and literature
Language use is shaped by societal norms surrounding gender identities, reinforcing gendered stereotypes in linguistic expression. However, recent research suggests that individuals may adopt counter-stereotypical language styles to achieve specific communicative purposes, particularly in professional settings where occupational demands take precedence over social expectations. This study examines professional environments as a distinct case in w…
Technology or Market? How Innovation Drivers Shape Consumer Responses to AI-Designed Services
The rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is substantially transforming service design in the hospitality and tourism sector. Despite extensive discussion about the potential benefits of AI in this field, consumers’ reactions to human-designed services compared with AI-designed services have not been sufficiently explored. Drawing on stereotype theory, this research proposes that human- and AI-designed services elicit divergent consum…
Prior incarceration and functional limitation trajectories in older adults
INTRODUCTION: Functional limitations are a key indicator of ageing, associated with quality of life, independence and the need for caregiving and long-term support. Research shows that formerly incarcerated older adults have more functional limitations than those who have never been incarcerated, yet there is a lack of research on prior incarceration and changes in functional limitations over time. METHODS: Data come from 8377 adults aged ≥55 who…
Utilization of Traditional Complementary and Alternative Medicine Across Ethnically Diverse Asian Americans
The relationship of history of psychiatric and substance use disorders on risk of dementia among racial and ethnic groups in the United States
The findings indicate that having psychiatric and substance use history increases the risk of developing AD and VaD in later life. Preventing the onset and recurrence of such disorders may prevent or delay the onset of AD and VaD dementia subtypes. Prevention efforts should pay particular attention to non-Hispanic White and African American older adults who have history of other psychiatric disorders.Future research should address diagnostic shor…
The Effect of Support From Secondary Caregiver Network on Primary Caregiver Burden
Our findings support the role of SCN in reducing primary caregiver burden and demonstrate that the benefit of SCN support varies across the 4 gender-race groups. The results indicate that it is imperative to further examine caregiving experience and protective mechanisms of SCN support using an intersectional perspective
Association between Role Overload and Sleep Disturbance among Dementia Caregivers
Objective: To explore the association between role overload (RO) and sleep maintenance insomnia (SMI), and the moderation effects of social support and social engagement (SE). Methods: We report a cross-sectional study using data drawn from the 2015 National Health and Aging Trends Study and National Study of Caregiving. We used multiple regression and controlled for demographics and potential confounders. Results: Nearly 45% of caregivers report…
Stigmatising beliefs about Alzheimer’s disease
Responding to the public health significance of Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and lack of information on AD-related issues in Asian Americans, the present study examined the prevalence and predictors of three stigmatising beliefs about AD (beliefs that associate AD with a normal process of ageing, family embarrassment and social avoidance) using a sample of Asian Americans representing diverse ethnic groups (Chinese, Asian Indian, Korean, Vietnamese, …
