Pure tone audiometry and impedance screening of school entrant children by nurses
BACKGROUND: Screening for hearing loss in English children at entry to school (age 5-6 years) is usually by pure tone audiometry sweep undertaken by school nurses. This study aimed to compare the validity and screening rates of pure tone audiometry with impedance screening in these children. METHODS: Two stage pure tone audiometry and impedance methods of screening were compared in 610 school entry children from 19 infant schools in north east En…
Alzheimer's disease and the relationship between silicon and aluminium in water supplies in northern England
Establishing baseline data in cancer registration in northern England
OBJECTIVE--To assess the completeness and accuracy of cancer surveillance data relevant to Health of the Nation targets. DESIGN--A comparison of locally ascertained data on cancer with recorded cancer registry sources in selected diagnoses. SETTING--The district of South West Durham within the Northern Regional Health Authority. PATIENTS--All patients with lung, skin, and malignant cervical cancer who were resident and diagnosed in the district o…
Risk factors in clinically diagnosed presenile dementia of the Alzheimer type
STUDY OBJECTIVE--To investigate the relationship between presenile dementia of the Alzheimer type (PDAT) and family history, medical history, cigarette smoking, and exposure to aluminum. DESIGN--A case-control study in which 109 cases of clinically diagnosed PDAT and 109 controls matched for age and sex were compared for exposure to the risk factors. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using McNemar's test. SETTING--The northern health region of En…
Death certification after a diagnosis of presenile dementia
STUDY OBJECTIVES--To assess the value of death certification for the epidemiological study of dementia, the frequency with which the condition was recorded on death certificates of patients diagnosed with some form of dementia before the age of 65 years was studied. A further objective was to identify variables associated with failure to record dementia on the certificate. DESIGN--A cohort of patients with presenile dementia, differentiated by a …
Evaluation of pure tone audiometry and impedance screening in infant schoolchildren
STUDY OBJECTIVE--The aims were (1) to evaluate impedance measurements against pure tone audiometry as a screening method for the detection of middle ear changes associated with hearing loss in infant school children; (2) to estimate the costs of the health authority of each method. DESIGN--The study involved two stage screening in which both methods were offered, pure tone audiometry being carried out by school nurses and impedance screening by a…

Hospital Performance and Regional Equity
The objective of this article is to see whether or not the attainment of regional equity within the hospital sector has involved any sacrifice in hospital performance. 1 For most health services providing medical care free of charge, regional equity is usually an important objective; but when doctors decide who gets into hospital and for how long regional equity may be difficult to achieve in practice. We look at certain indicators of hospital in…
Accidental poisoning in young children
Cases of accidental childhood poisoning admitted to hospital were compared with community controls and hospital controls matched for age and sex. The relative risks of factors in the cases compared with both the control groups were significant for roughness, aggressiveness, noisiness, and pica behaviour in the child, and for large families. Mothers' knowledge of the toxicity of common household products and drugs did not give significant risk dif…
