Sex differences in risk of incident microvascular and macrovascular complications
BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of diabetes is similar in men and women; however, there is conflicting evidence regarding sex differences in diabetes-related complications. The aim of this study was to investigate sex differences in incident microvascular and macrovascular complications among adults with diabetes. METHODS: This prospective cohort study linked data from the 45 and Up Study, Australia, to administrative health records. The study …
Impact of lifestyle risk factors on admission to nursing home care
BACKGROUND: Little is known on how lifestyle factors, individually or in combination, may relate to nursing home admission, an outcome of great societal and economic importance with increased population ageing. The aim of this study was to determine the association of lifestyle risk factors with nursing home admission. METHODS: This prospective cohort study linked data from the 45 and Up Study, Australia, to health records. 127 108 men and women,…
Healthy Lifestyle Behaviours Are Associated with Children’s Psychological Health
Protecting children's mental health is important and studies have shown that diet and exercise can have a positive impact. There are limited data available, however, from representative populations of children on the relationship between regular healthy lifestyle behaviours and psychological health. Data were obtained from the New South Wales Child Population Health Survey, 2013-2014. Parents were asked about diet, physical activity and screen ti…
Sitting Time, Physical Activity, and Risk of Mortality in Adults
BACKGROUND: It is unclear what level of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity (MVPA) offsets the health risks of sitting. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the joint and stratified associations of sitting and MVPA with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality, and to estimate the theoretical effect of replacing sitting time with physical activity, standing, and sleep. METHODS: A longitudinal analysis of t…
The descriptive epidemiology of total physical activity, muscle-strengthening exercises and sedentary behaviour among Australian adults – results from the National Nutrition and Physical Activity Surv…
The large majority of Australian adults do not meet the full physical activity guidelines and/or report excessive SB. Our results call for public health interventions to reduce physical inactivity and SB in Australia, particularly among the subgroups at the highest risk of these unhealthy behaviours
Translational research
This is one of the few studies to report outcomes of a government-funded, program at scale in a real-world setting, and shows that investment in a community-based child obesity treatment program holds potential to produce short-term changes in weight and weight-related behaviours. The findings support government investment in this health priority area, and demonstrate that community-based models of child obesity treatment are a promising adjuncti…
