Incidence of Haemolytic Disease of the Newborn in the Offspring of Sisters
The Total Lung Volume and its Subdivisions. A Study in Physiological Norms
Many previous workers have published the results of their estimations of the total lung volume and its subdivisions in normal subjects. These are tabulated below in Table
The Total Lung Volume and its Subdivisions
Numerous attempts have been made to correlate the vital capacity of normal subjects with other physical measurements. As long ago as 1846, Hutchinson examined its relationship with age, height, weight, and chest circumference in males. Though he found no uniform correlation between vital capacity and bodyweight and no correlation whatever with chest circumference, he stated that the vital capacity increased by eight cu. in. for every inch of heig…

age of the mother, and the number of previous children born to her, for all births completely registered. Unfortunately the number of previous children does not give exactly the parity of a birth, as some of the previous children may have resulted from multiple births. As the proportion of multiple maternities to all maternities seldom exceeds 2 per cent., the consequent lack of precision is not likely to lead to serious error in most application…
The Total Lung Volume and its Subdivisions
The effect of posture on lung volume has long been a subject of interest among respiratory physiologists.Over a century ago Hutchinson (1846) found that his own vital capacity was smaller in recumbency than when he was erect, but it was over 70 years before the general truth of this observation was confirmed by Christie and Beams (1922).They determined the vital capacity of 146 men and 144 women in both lying and sitting postures, and found that …
Studies on Puberty
Nerve growth factor (NGF) has many effects on sympathetic and sensory neurons, but the mechanisms by which NGF exerts its actions are unknown. We have determined the localization of bound and internalized 125I-NGF by light and electron microscopic radioautography on a cell line derived from a rat pheochromocytoma (PC12). In response to NGF, PC12 cells cease mitosis and develop neuron-like processes. We have localized 125I-NGF (5 ng/ml) in cells w…
Studies on Puberty. Part I
We acknowledge our great indebtedness to the Education Committee of the Borough of Tottenham, and to its Education Officer, to the Principals of the Schools in which examinations took place, to Dr. Norah Webster of the Public Health Department of the Borough, for collaboration in examining the children, to Mr. R. Cawley for invaluable assistance in sorting the data, and to Miss Gladys
Incompatibility of Mother and Foetus with respect to the Iso-Agglutinogen A and its Antibody
Recent research on the Rh antigen discovered by Landsteiner and Wiener (1940) has provided conclusive evidence pointing to the occurrence of maternal iso-immunization-i.e. the production of antibodies by the mother in response to the presence of corpuscular antigens in the foetus. Maternal iso-imlunization throws new light on the occurrence of neonatal haemolytic anaemias, of stillbirths, and of abortions in sibships containing members so affecte…
