  • Acute and Subacute Effects of Urban Air Pollution on Cardiopulmonary Emergencies and Mortality

Open Access•Manfred Neuberger, Hanns Moshammer et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2013

Daily pollution data (collected in Graz over 16 years and in the Linz over 18 years) were used for time series studies (GAM and case-crossover) on the relationship with daily mortality (overall and specific causes of death). Diagnoses of patients who had been transported to hospitals in Linz were also available on a daily basis from eight years for time series analyses of cardiopulmonary emergencies. Increases in air pollutant levels over several…

  • Reducing ambient levels of fine particulates could substantially improve health

    Ferran Ballester, S Medina et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2008•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Recently new European policies on ambient air quality—namely, the adoption of new standards for fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ), have generated a broad debate about choosing the air quality standards that can best protect public health. The Apheis network estimated the number of potential premature deaths from all causes that could be prevented by reducing PM 2.5 annual levels to 25 μg/m3, 20 μg/m3, 15 μg/m3 and 10 μg/m3 in 26 European cities. …

  • Critical Review

    Open Access•K H Ginzel, Gert S Maritz et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Health Psychology•2007

The recent expansion of Nicotine Replacement Therapy to pregnant women and children ignores the fact that nicotine impairs, disrupts, duplicates and/or interacts with essential physiological functions and is involved in tobacco-related carcinogenesis. The main concerns in the present context are its fetotoxicity and neuroteratogenicity that can cause cognitive, affective and behavioral disorders in children born to mothers exposed to nicotine dur…

  • European smokefree class competition

Reiner Hanewinkel, Gudrun Wiborg et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Epidemiology and…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 5

This letter corrects misleading and incorrect statements about the smokefree class competition (SFC) in a recent paper.1 Statement 1. “Modified versions of this competition should be developed, using ... group influence in a positive way. For instance, a non-smoking contest is being developed in Geneva using student’s creativity and peer support in the class” (p. 759)

  • Environmental tobacco smoke exposure in public places of European cities

Manel Nebot, María J López et al.•ARTICLE•Tobacco Control•2005

Although there is some variability between cities, this study shows that tobacco smoke is present in most of the studied public places. The study also showed that in areas where smoking is prohibited, concentrations of nicotine are lower than in areas where smoking is allowed but they are not zero. The results of this study indicate that policies should be implemented that would effectively reduce levels of tobacco smoke in public areas
