Risks of lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, ischaemic heart disease, and stroke in relation to type of cigarette smoked
In a case control study of over 12 000 inpatients aged 35-74, risk of lung cancer, chronic bronchitis, and, particularly in those aged 35-54, ischaemic heart disease was positively associated with the number of manufactured cigarettes smoked daily and was negatively associated with long term giving up. Risk of stroke was not clearly related to smoking. Among manufactured cigarette smokers, lung cancer risk tended to be lowest in those who had alw…
A study of space-time clustering in Hodgkin's disease in the Manchester region
MacMahon (1966), in a comprehensive review of the epidemiology of Hodgkin's disease, provided evi dence for the hypothesis that Hodgkin's disease may consist of several separate entities. Cole, MacMahon, and Aisenberg (1968) supported this hypothesis by analysis of regional and age variation in mortality within the United States. Smithers (1970) has reviewed the epidemiological and clinical evidence and he concludes that it is unlikely that Hodgk…
Terminal care of cancer patients
SOCIETY FOR SOCIAL MEDICINE (4.O41) with the medical staffing ratio, but hospital utilization factors together accounted for a higher proportion of the variance in mean stay after operation.Overall only 38 % of the variance was 'explained' by the factors in the equation
Terminal care in malignant disease
PATIENTS may be referred to hospital in the terminal stages of cancer for specific medical needs or because home circumstances are unsuitable. Other patients may be cared for in difficult conditions at home, because of the wishes of the patients or their rela- tives. The aim of the present study was to categorize the terminal needs of patients dying from cancer in the city of Manchester, which has a population of over six hundred thousand
Assessment of Habitual Physical Activity apart from Occupation
The hypothesis that habitual physical activity protects against coronary (ischaemic) heart disease is derived from statistical comparisons which show that incidence, prevalence, and mortality rates vary inversely with the average levels of exercise involved in different occupations (Morris, Heady, Raffle, Roberts, and Parks, 1953). Similar findings were subsequently made in a variety of studies of occupa- tional groups in several countries (Brown…
Data on sickness absence in some recent publications of the Ministry of Pensions and National Insurance
Accuracy of diagnosis on death certificates compared with that in hospital records
Mortality statistics have been available in Great Britain
