Associations between emotional and attentional problem characteristics and problematic internet use patterns
While most people use the Internet in a balanced and responsible way, some individuals develop problematic internet behaviour that can have severe, harmful consequences. This type of behaviour is strongly linked to attentional and emotional problems. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between problematic internet use patterns, and attentional and emotional problems. The present study was based on the Northern Finland…
Temperament and longitudinal changes in physical activity – the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study
A passive temperament profile characterized by high harm avoidance is associated with a higher risk of low MVPA level than other temperament profiles over the life cycle in females. The results suggest that temperament may play a role in determining the level and sustainability of MVPA. Individual targeting and intervention tailoring for promoting physical activity should consider temperament traits
Effects of Symptoms of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD) on Academic Performance and Educational Attainment
The aim of this longitudinal population-based cohort study was to examine the effects of ADHD and ODD symptoms in adolescence on academic performance at age 16, and on educational attainment by the age of 32. The participants were classified into four groups: those with symptoms of ADHD, ODD, ADHD + ODD, and a control group. Early academic performance at the age of…
Associations of adolescents’ diet and meal patterns with school performance in the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986
BACKGROUND: Several observational studies indicate that dietary habits in children and adolescents are associated with school performance. These associations are heavily confounded by socio-economic characteristics, such as household income and parents' educational attainment, amongst other factors. The objective of this study was to explore the association between diet and school performance in adolescents from the Northern Finland Birth Cohort …
Substance use confounds associations between peer victimization and aggression in adolescence with mental disorders in adulthood
INTRODUCTION: Peer victimization and aggression in adolescence are associated with later mental health morbidity. However, studies examining this association have not controlled for adolescent substance use. We aimed to study the associations between peer victimization, peer aggression, and mental disorders in adulthood, adjusting for substance use in adolescence. METHODS: Participants were from the prospective Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1986.…

METHODS: The subjects of this study were part of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. The follow-up data were collected through clinical examinations and questionnaires when the cohort members were 1, 14, 31 and 46 years old. In this study, cohort participation activ…

Investigating pragmatic abilities in young Finnish adults using the Assessment Battery for Communication
Pragmatic communication refers to the ability to use language and other expressive means, i.e. non-verbal/extralinguistic means such as gestures and facial expressions, in order to convey and interpret meaning in a specific context. Pragmatic abilities are important in everyday life in interpersonal interactions as they affect the way people communicate and behave in social situations. Providing a comprehensive and accurate assessment of pragmati…
Attention and Working Memory in Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder
Pubertal Development and Sexual Intercourse Among Adolescent Girls
There are strong reasons to assume that early onset of puberty accelerates coital debut among adolescent girls. Although many studies support this assumption, evidence regarding the putative causal processes is limited and inconclusive. In this research, longitudinal data from the 1986 Northern Finland Birth Cohort Study ( N = 2,596) were used to address three theoretical explanations: (a) a direct effect premised on biological processes, (b) a m…
Antisocial Propensity, Adolescent School Outcomes, and the Risk of Criminal Conviction
Data from the 1986 N orthern F inland B irth C ohort S tudy ( n = 4,645) were used to examine the influence of mid‐adolescent (age 15) school outcomes on late‐adolescent (ages 17–19) risk of criminal conviction. Consistent with social‐developmental theories of offending, we found that poor academic performance and reduced school attachment increase the risk of criminal conviction independently of pre‐existing differences in antisocial propensity …
